Hello Lads , I had a conversation with a very old man in the Butchers Arms here in Cardiff about two years back and he told me he had fought a draw with The Rock over 4 rounds as an amature at a Royal Air Force base named St Athen Nr Cardiff Wales UK during WW2 , This old man was named Dr Jack Mathews and he later went on to gain something like 33 Welsh rugby union Caps and 4 British Lion Caps , Can anyone confirm i am indeed a rare individual who has sat and drank a pint with a man whom Marciano couldn't master within the square circle ? This old man is a retired doctor and a former rugby player who played at the very top of his chosen sport and not prone to spinning a yarn . your help in this would be greatly appreciated . Thanks in advance . :good
It is true, no winner was declared after 4 rounds, it's lucky that Marciano did not try and take Matthews on at rugby, Matthews broke a NewZealand All Blacks player sternum and ribs in a tackle ! , the All Black came back on the pitch to score the winning try, to describe these men as hard is an understatement.
When i say hard i am not talking about Rocky, i am refering to Jack Matthews and Ron Elvidge the All Black.
Thanks mate for the reply , Yes thats another story i heared , these old Guys were tough as old boots but when i had a pint with him he just seemed like your average old timer who couldn't snap a twig , i had about two hours talking to him and he asked me if i knew who his mate was and pointed to a picture on the pub wall i had never seen before , when i replied yes mate thats Jimmy Wilde he laughed hard and asked how i knew that , we chatted about Wilde for a while then his Son came in and asked me if he was boring me lol . What a fantastic encounter aye ? Thanks again Trampie
