Archie Moore always maintained that Marciano's title was saved when the ref gave him a standng eight count, even though it was agreed before hand that the standing eight count was not in effect. Many who have watched the fight think it was just Moore's penchant for selling, as it at no time looked like Marciano was seriously hurt. What to the ESB classic forum experts think?
It's significant in my view. The more time the hurt fighter has to recover, the better it is for the hurt fighter, that should be obvious enough. Moore was a KO specialist and he was also there for the early KO - his fight plan saw him firmly in the danger zone from the outset. My money would personally still be on Rocky, but Moore should have had the chance to prove otherwise, and might have done so. Anyone think that this win would have been enough to make Moore p4p #1 all time?
All fighters benefit from a standing eight count. The question is did Marciano really need it? Probably not, but we will never know for sure. I don't think Moore would be #1 p4p if he beat Marciano, but I do think one loss for Rocky moves him out of the top ten at heavyweight for sure.
I agree, in Marciano's case that one loss would make a staggering difference to his resume and ranking. As it is, he has earned his aura of invincibility. The Moore fight is actually one of my favorites as Marciano performs like a relentless machine. I would penalise Marciano heavily if Moore had dusted him, as it opens up a H2H can of worms ("if 180 lb Moore could do it, imagine what Valuev could do!)...The common critcisms (quality and size of opposition) would carry much more credibility than they currently do.
I don't see much controversy at all. The referee made a mistake but it was merely a flash knockdown; Marciano was ready to go on instantly and unless memory fails me, it wasn't like he was holding on for life afterwards. He pretty much dominated that fight.
Rock got up at 4, and the ref touch his gloves, you can even see the Ref CLEARY state that when he touch the gloves, that they can go in the intro. He did the same too Moore also.
I think Marciano would have won anyway but I will say that Moore shook him up worse than Walcott did.
Marciano bounced right up and Moore had 6 more rounds to land his best, Nothing would have saved Moore from the awfull whooping he took off Rocky, weak arguement by Archie
Now I woulnt say that, Moore relly only had one good movement, the 2nd round, and it was a pretty one sided fight most of the way. Walcott on the other hand had a a amazing first round, Even had Marciano hurt in round 11. And was beating Marciano up though out the fight.(Not to say Marciano wasnt getting his shots in, he also was landed on Walcott, the fight was a war)
Total horse****. Flash knockdown. Rock got up quickly, ref wiped gloves, and they went right back at it and Marciano was fine.
Watch the film, it was, again, a flash knockdown and just a blip in what was a steady, relentless, remorseless beatdown that broke Archie and probably made him think he was fighting two Rockys. It was like a mugging on a dark night in a subway for Archie. Archie had a grudge going or something. What b.s.
It's a romantic's view to say that had Marciano not received the standing 8, the title could have changed hands. Fair enough, it makes for good reading. I do think though that Marciano, if not hurt, was shaken up a bit. Moore caught Rocky boring in flush with a stiff punch, and although Marciano got up quickly, he tried to shake the lead in his legs - at least as far as I can recall. I agree with Janitor that he was more shaken up here than against Walcott.
Moore had numerous complaints about this fight which seemed to contradict each other. I also remember him saying Marciano got a long count and that the ref had it in for him. The bottom line is that Moore sustained one of the worst beatings you could ever watch. Moore definitely stung him but Marciano was back giving better that he got the next round. And not long after that, Moore took a sadistic beating.
Whilst agreeing broadly with the tone of the thread I do think Moore may be being underestimated a bit here. Let's not forget his KO record. Let's not forget what he came to do. Let's not forget that Moore got into the ring only to win once he found his way. Moore's chances of KOing Rocky are better then sooner after the KO he is able to get to him.
