It's a well known fact that Marciano would never fight in front of a crowd that wasn't loaded with Goombah's. He fought exclusively on the highly Italianate Eastern Seaboard of the US with something like 65-70% of his fights in Providence (I don't have time to do the math). The lone time he traveled west, he journeyed to Goombah Pacifico in San Francisco and gave the worst performance of his or damn near any championship reign. Where does he stand in the pantheon of champion homeboys? How does this affect his legacy? If Brian Mitchell is measuring stick for a true Road Warrior is Marciano the same for the coddled fighter who likes homecooking and being tucked into the same bed every night?
In the era Marciano fought where else was he going to fight? Even today fighters are built up at home then move onto the fight centres of the day. Las Vegas had not got going by then. What big fights of the period took place outside of the kind of places Rocky fought anyway? I would like to know where you think he should have been fighting? Kingston Jamaica? Manila? Stockholm or perhaps somewhere else?
Joe Louis fought all over the place, Washington DC, Detroit, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Ohio, Missouri. Floyd Patterson fought in Miami, Las Vegas, Toronto, Seattle, Chicago, LA, Oakland and post-title Puerto Rico, Stockholm, Ontario, UK. In his 49 fights, Marciano fought 32 in New England (28 fight in Providence, Rhode Island alone) and 10 in NYC.
I know about Weill and his dealings. Al was hard-nosed and an astute observer of the game. Maybe he knew something.
Al was very smart. He knew his fighters' limitations and was very good to give them every advantage possible. Marciano played to friendly crowds, and largely the same crowds. Whether this was entirely by design or coincidence is somewhat the topic of this thread. Do you have any more light to shed on Al? He had some very good fighters besides Marciano, Ambers, Servo and Godoy.
What limitations did Marciano have? He doesn't have a glass chin. What advantages? He had no brother to help his reign nor did he have some slave contract. Weill was smart but not as smart as youre making him out to be. Silverman and another fellow were the reason what made him so smart.
Partly I am wondering if the reason behind Marciano's pronounced homebody tendencies had some origin in him being coddled by his management... or are there lots of fighters who I just can't think of that fought in the same city for 60% of their total career. Maybe Rock really performed for a home crowd and lost his fire in front of neutrals... who knows? He was known to be rather underwhelming in sparring.
Stop wondering. Klitschkos fight in Germany because thats where their money is.Floyd fights in Las Vegas because thats where his money is. NY is where Weill could make the most money back then.
Can't tell if Seamus is serious or looking for an angered reaction from Marciano fans...don't bite chaps!
