haven't been in lisboa since 06.

if you wanna see my mancrush on marciano, check out the other thread going now. i still consider him, head to head, the greatest sub 200 pounder to grace the ring. sometimes holyfield or dempsey challenge that title.

i'm stirring up **** but not without a point. it is odd how untraveled he was. however, it is also odd how late he started and what a short career he had. all in all, an odd but very well-planned career. and certainly odd that he never lost.

That's a good one. Nevada and California.

I get the whole argument that NYC was the heart of the game, like Vegas would later be and AC would aspire to be. But a guy like Ali, winning the title just a decade after Marciano, ended taking the crown on a world tour before he was done. Louis, before Marciano, had much more range in his travels.

Ali was unique. Louis fought mainly out of NY & the east coast, and had something like twenty five title defenses.

Marciano fight in Philly, Chicago, San Fran... so he fought in his backyard during his rise. The concern is champions who seclude themselves and protect themselves, not young fighter fighting near home early on. The Calzaghe & Ward's of the world.

Yet, Marciano was only given a long leash by Al when the pickings were easy. Walcott had no interest in going to war with the Rock a second time. He went down from the first punch and made sure 10 had been counted before he got up. Cockell was a no-hoper the whole way in that match-up.

Hows about Mike Tyson? His whole jimmy jacobs and bill clayton "in house" development was all New York and unlike Marciano Mike was a native New Yorker. Las Vegas is a fight centre - a neutral venue for champs as is Tokyo for Americans. Tyson had one international challenger Frank Bruno. Where did he fight him 60,000 soccer stadium in the UK? No, neutral Las Vegas where Tyson lived!

I am a New Yorker most of my life and I can tell you there is a difference between Boston, New England and R.I. In fact my uncles told me a story about this Big Italian kid out of the Bronx a rough tough kid, green and wild but could punch and had a lot of heart, he was match at MSG New York against this kid from MA and they though this kid Carmine was going all the way, anyway this kid Rocky goes at him toe to toe and puts Carmine in a coma.

Next up they bring this MA kid Rocky back but this time against unbeaten 37-0 N.Y. star smart and polished Roland Lastarza, my uncles have their hopes up for Lastarza but Marciano drops Roland and lands the heavier shots and even my Uncles felt Rocky won.

In reality Marciano never defended his title in his home town, He won it in Philadelphia PA, defended it against Walcott in Chicago Ill. 3 of his fights were in Yankee stadium but that was where many of the big fights were held at the time, he defended against Cockel in San Fransisco CA so I do not see any fights in the New England area once he became Champ

These were the days before closed circuit TV or PPV so I guess you had to fight where the best money was offered for a live gate and where your crowd came out.
