    Absolutely the context is key.

    you can say that again.

to be fair, Baker and Valdes were a lot more worn down when Machen fought them.

fine win for Machen stopping Valdes, probably his best, but that’s after Satterfield, Johnson, Baker and Moore had already beaten him in very punishing fights.

same with Baker. He was losing to the likes of Roy Harris and Willie Besmanoff by the time Machen got him. So that’s a different value Baker to when Moore beat him. Just think of the context here.

let’s not get rather carried away.

    You're hilarious!
"Moore had 12 wins over hall of famers"?

His fights with Johnson and Maxim were at lhvy that's 7 cancelled out in this thread !
Bobo Olson was a Middleweight ,that takes 8 out of the heavyweight reckoning.
    That leaves 4 = 3 times Bivins!
So Three Wins Over One Hall Of Famer!
Name the other one, I'm betting he wasnt a heavyweight or even a light heavy!
And you have the gall to mention the word CONTEXT! lol

you can’t compare 34 fights in nine years versus 49 fights in seven years.

Of course the 34 fight in nine years boxer SHOULD be fighting better opponents over the fewer years.

The fighter fighting more often in fewer years can afford to have more learning fights.

    The quality should not compare.

Consider this fact: it took Liston far more years. Sonny completed his apprenticeship before he even went to prison and had to start over. He had to catch up.

LH and HW contenders were so interchangeable in those days. The LH belt was practically in the HW division. It was open to HW contenders who could make 175. Johnson, Moore, Maxim, Bivins and Charles all beat heavyweight champions. Of course they should count as heavyweight wins!

Liston did not fight for nearly 2 yearsFFS! Marciano's manager was also the matchmaker for MSG he was tied in with the IBC everything was done to pave his way.
Liston had his 1 st loss to18-6-2 Marshall in his 8th fight without even his manager or corner man being there .He was thrown in with Johnny Summerlin 18-1-2 in his 6th and 7th fights!
    Marciano's
    6th fight Jimmy Weekes 0-0-0
    7th fight Humphrey Jackson 4-2-0
    8th Bill Hardeman 1-4-0

Carry on defending the indefensible. You make me tired!

YOU ARE FULL OF IT AND I DONT MEAN SENSE,LOGIC, OR PRIDE!

This simply is not true. The report of the fight describes Sonny as “highly touted” and former “international golden glove winner”. There’s no way Sonny carried his own spit bucket and sat alone in the corner.

It is true that Liston's losses are all of an "understandable" nature when taken in context, but Marciano, too, had a number of fights in which, had he lost, it could have been seen as "understandable" (for example, the matches against far-more-experienced undefeated prospects Ross and Quinn in Marciano's third and fourth pro fights), but he never did lose, and thus he still contrasts favorably with Liston.

    From Time Magazine:

"Whatever his connections, many boxing buffs see Liston as the U.S.'s most promising challenger for Sweden's Johansson, even though Liston has so far fought only second-raters."

-August 1959 (right after Liston had KO'd Nino Valdes)

Like Time Magazine knew jack **** about boxing? If beating Williams ,DeJohn ,and Bethea prior to beating Valdes means you've been fighting second raters,I wonder what they would have said about Marciano's opponents at the same stage of his career?

Liston had a bucket man whom he didnt know in his corner,no trainer and no manager. For somebody who never misses an opportunity to dump on Sonny you really don't know much about his career do you?

And for Gods sake don;t talk me about TRUTH!
You've made 3 untruthful statements in 2 days
    1. Patterson was not contracted to defend against the winner of Folley v Machen,
    2. Mathews was not the Rings Fighter of the year in1951 or any other year!
    3. Marciano was not fast tracked .he was fed a steady diet of humpty dumpties with the occasional reasonable opponent for half of his career. Three UNTRUTHS

Lol I’m not gonna argue semantics w u. If you can’t see the relevance of beating Bivins, Maxim, Harold Johnson multiple times each when all are WELL proven at hw there’s nothing I can possibly say to you. Moore is much more proven at Hw then Machen at Hw even with out those wins. Beating prime versions of Baker, Valdez, Henry, Satterfield, Curtis Sheppard, and Bivins. Is better then Machens victories. I’m not sure why you’re arguing this so strongly. Especially if you’re being reasonable and take the Maxim and Harold Johnson wins into context. Both more then proven at Hw.

Johnson and Maxim were not ,"well proven at heavyweight ,"when Moore beat them.
You are going in the wrong direction .This , [ thread, within a thread ,] is not about whether Moore was a greater heavyweight than Machen or a greater fighter.Moore is a top 4 lhvy of all time, maybe only Charles was better, though Tunney would give him an argument.
It's about who has the better resume at heavyweight Moore or Machen? My contention is there is nothing to choose between them, Why that incenses you so much I haven't a clue?
