Tyson is the Newman of the Heavyweight Champions. By that I mean as in the Seinfeld episode where Newman hopes to win a new route but doesn't wan to work for it. Jerry says, "What, you just give up without trying?". To which Newman replies, "I usually do.". Tyson all the way when there was no quick ko. Settle for nonaggression pact dec or give up. MARCIANO NEVER STOPPED. Even Tyson will admit this. Why can't you?
Thanks. I must've wrote than a while ago, still in my writing prime. LOL I can't work out which is worse. Bruno KOing Marciano, or Cooney doing the same. Tyson's performance against Bruno in 1989 was sloppy. Some would argue Tyson was in severe decline already and it is true that he was coming off an absolutely dramatic event-filled 8 month lay-off and injury. Or maybe he had trouble finding his rhythm due to Bruno's constant pulling and holding on his neck. Bruno was concerned (or scared) enough in there to risk disqualification because despite a point deduction within the first 2 minutes of the fight, he never ceased with that tactic. No one can deny Bruno rocked Tyson, no one can deny Bruno was strong and powerful. But by round 3 or 4 he was dying fast in there. A prime Marciano would chop Bruno down in similar fashion. It's noteworthy that when virtually the whole world reckoned Bruno's chances against Tyson had increased (in 1996), Bruno turned in an even lesser performance. Bruno lost to a fat overweight Witherspoon. Witherspoon was 15 pounds over his best fighting weight. He clearly didn't take Bruno seriously. Witherspoon looked gassed after a couple of rounds but still outlasted the stiff Bruno. I think Lewis is a bit overrated and wasn't the finished article in 1993. That was Bruno's finest performance, but again he folded quite suddenly when he was hurt, just as he had done years earlier against Smith. He crumbled and stood there helpless, with no clue whatsoever. More importantly, it's worth asking who did Bruno ever beat ? In his entire career. The mediocre Oliver McCall, and an out of shape, over-the-hill Gerrie Coetzee, and some other has-beens and late substitutes and a whole array of tomato cans.
Don’t misunderstand me here. Marciano is a greater fighter than Bruno, he’s one of my favourite all time fighters. While I think in these mythical match ups size is an overrated issue sometimes it’s relevant, and I think this is possibly one of those cases.
Fair enough. But I think Bruno's would have to get really lucky to get a win against Marciano. Bruno's the kind of heavyweight whose size and physique could be almost as much a hindrance as an asset. He'd be a big lump for someone like Marciano to chew through.
Bruno overpowers him within five rounds. Not the same weight division here, no matter what people say.
