I would love to hear an argument as to why Marciano belongs outside the top 10, there are people with more wins over ranked opponents but they lack his consistency.
No I didn't, I said he generally was not a one punch ko artist and he wasn't, he usually wore his opponent down until he was gassed before he got the stoppage. eg Cockell,Moore Charles,Louis,Lastarza. He targeted Layne's soft midsection before going for the ko, and wore down a 38 years old Walcott who was increasingly going to the ropes to snatch a quick rest and save his legs.Something common in older fighters.
Marciano going undefeated doesn't mean much to me either, if he had dropped a decision or 2 it wouldn't particularly impact on where I rank him ,he sits below the likes of Dempsey for me and Jack had some losses before he reached his prime. You dismiss the fight report? Okay, would that be because it didn't make Marciano the winner? I thought GGG beat Alvarez when I watched the fight in Thailand and so did the 2 Americans sitting next to me.
I'd say Marciano was prime in this fight wouldn't you? Life magazine reported: "Trying to knock the challenger out with one punch, the 29-year-old Marciano was over-eager and awkward. He lunged, butted, hit below the belt, on the break and after the bell. Once, he swung so wildly that he missed and slipped clumsily to the canvas. Outboxing the champion and avoiding his blows, LaStarza managed to win four of the first six rounds. In the seventh, Marciano changed his tactics, started aiming at LaStarza's body as well as his head in an attempt to wear the challenger down. He succeeded."
Everyone hits their prime different. Physically he was prob at his best but boxing wise he was nowhere near it. I personally put him at his best at around the Harry Matthews fight to LaStarza 2. He was way to raw even LaStarza said he wasn’t close to the same fighter.
I’ll just counter that with are you dismissing the judges account of the fight? I don’t completely dismiss the report it at the least let’s me know it was a close fight. As you can see by our opinions in regards to recent fights opinions can swing widely in regards to fight scoring.
I would never dismiss a report of a fight I hadn't seen ,you appear to be downplaying that one because it does not suit your obvious agenda!
McVey said Rocky lacked one punch power. Need I say more? - Mendoza mcvey says: No I didn't, I said he generally was not a one punch ko artist and he wasn't he usually wore his opponent down until he was gassed before he got the stoppage. eg ****ell,Moore Charles,Louis,Lastarza. This content is protected This content is protected https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/marciano-vs-matthews.532249/page-4 Make up your mind! Was he a one punch KO artists or not? In the past you said you question his one punch power. I put in your quote above. Now your hedging it. Marciano axed Layne and Matthews based on one big punch. The answer if yes he could be. I doubt you have researched half of Rocky's fights.
E'yep that's his prime. Nobody ever tried to claim Marciano was some master boxer (I hate people who go on about the subtleties of his defense or whatever). Marciano was a slam bam didn't give a damn fighter, and he broke LaStarza bad. Though I have to admit it took him some time to warm into the fight, unlike say, the Walcott fights That is Marciano's prime.
I provided a snippet of the report from the second fight . The fact that Marciano is described as 29 years old and Lastarza as the challenger should have been enough clues I would have thought!.
He wasn't an all time one punch hitter in my opinion I said that then and I reiterate it now. Mathews was a 170lbs plus light heavyweight hype job I would expect Bob Foster to do the same to him,and numerous other punchers. Marciano weakened Layne for the ko by bombarding his belly on the advice of Goldman who had noticed in Layne's fight with Goldman's charge Cesar Brion that Rex was weak there. Sorry your pathetic attempt is a damp squib!
I place him outside the top ten because H2H I think. Ali Johnson Dempsey Louis Holmes Liston Foreman Lewis Holyfield Tyson Beat him.
Just to get this back on track. Regarding the Marciano v. Vingo fight there is no such thing as a tape and "It is out there". The only footage is what we have just seen is recorded by a film camera from the hall, not an officially filmed version. Unfortunatly. I would like to be proved wrong, but I don´t think so.
