I disagree. While dempsey was certainly much faster than marciano and perhaps more accurate, he was inferior in 3 critical areas; punching power, stamina and chin. Marciano was a notch higher when it came to punching power (even though dempsey could thump as well) and he had the better chin. He also got stronger as a fight progressed. Also, while marciano was no defensive genious he was better than most people realize. He would crouch low and make his opponents punch down to him, and he would launch those muderous uppercuts from below. He was deceptive and was not hit flush as often as most experts would suppose. This would be a toe to toe slugfest which would be decided by two factors; punching power and chin, and these favor marciano. Dempsey was a fighter ahead of his time who probably would have done well in any era but imo he was a tad overrated.
This is an old thread, my views on Dempsey have changed since I first posted on here, but I still pick him over Rocky. I think Dempsey was faster, more accurate, more mobile, and had better defense and if there was any difference in their power or physical strength at all it was marginal. Rocky does have the better chin, but he was hurtable and dropable. I still believe that Dempsey was just a better, more skillful fighter than Marciano, and has more advantages in his favor. Stamina and chin are really the only two things Marciano has over Dempsey, and I don't think it's enough to overcome Dempsey's faster hands, more accurate punches and mobility. I think it would end with a mid-round stoppage in Dempsey's favor. Rocky could win, though, Dempsey's KO loss to Flynn puts a big question mark over his chin, so Rocky by stoppage isn't out of the question.
He took a while to get into his groove in the championship years, but he just seemed that kind of fighter who needed to fight often. He wasn't by nature a slow starter, although he seemed to get better as the rounds progressed. I agree cuts could be a big factor in determining the outcome. Fascinating fight this. About the only fight involving Rocky I'd love to see more would be against Joe Frazier.
Marciano by late stoppage. Too cute and strong for Dempsey who IMO wasn't even the best of his generation.
If you asked people to vote on the better fighter, without the stylistic head-to-head issue, Dempsey would come out on top. When you analyse the stylistic problem of the Rock for Dempsey, I think you still find that Dempsey will be too much for the Rock. Firstly, I can not see Rocky winning a decision based on Dempsey's skills. Secondly, Dempsey is generally regarded as having excellent power, so it is arguable that he could possibly KO Rocky, although that is definitely not a guarantee. Rocky had excellent power and carried it late, but does he have the power to KO Dempsey? The only situation I see Rocky KOing Dempsey is late in the fight similar to his win over Jersey Joe. He would be behind on the cards and the punishment he dished out would catch up with Dempsey or he would land flush. However, the man had 62 fights and was only KOed once, and that appears to have been thrown. Statistically, you must concur that Dempsey and Rocky would be standing at the end with a UD going to Dempsey. Next most likely outcome is Dempsey KOing Rock anywhere from round 2 onwards. Finally, the Rock KOing Manassa mauler late is the third most likely possibility. PS Marciano is my favourite fighter.
Man this would be a good one. I think I'll go with Dempsey. Marciano's punches kick like a mule, but his punches and wild. I think Dempsey would exploit Marciano's wild swinging and punish him every time. I really don't see the fight lasting to long as a result.
