@The Undefeated Lachbuster, I'd like your verdict in this especially as you are a big appreciater of both. An actual a serious Marciano Thread! The heart in this fight would be more than Victor Ortiz actually has in his chest. And the styles would probably make a great fighter, so Who wins? Over 15 rounds with a 16ft ring Marciano era rules
Marciano mid round KO. He hits the deck early, this fight would be brutal. Imo Marciano hits harder and has a better chin but Dempsey is faster and the overall better puncher due to accuracy and aggression. Marciano's stamina would help greatly when we start seeing those 4th 5th 6th rounds after a brutal pressure fight Also Dempsey isn't even one of my favorite fighters, I just respect what he did and I think he gets underrated due to Harry Wills being mythologized and the dreaded size argument
I can't even pick who hits harder, let alone who wins. I do think they both beat Wills though. And I do whole heartedly agree that this fight would be brutal
Dempsey himself said that Marciano hit harder if you wanna take that for granted Fun fact as well, Jack Sharkey said that Dempsey not only hit harder that Louis, but said that Dempsey hit harder than any man Sharkey faced
I know about the Sharkey quote, I didnt know about the Marciano one tho, so thanks for that. I don't really take anything into account when I calculate power I just form an opinion after watching their fights and KOs
Dempsey is very capible of winning, but I favor Marciano. Honestly I think if it happened 7 times it could play out 7 different ways. Dempsey does have the better reach and faster feet, I can't see him trying to fight at range, but it would mean he could land first coming in, and he often turned opponents. Dempsey could overexcert and tire out, while Rocky was very good at holding just enough in reserve, also while Dempsey could make himself harder to hit, he was much more prone to leaving himself open.
The great max schemling on Jack dempsey " he emboidied the complete perfection of a professional boxer". 2000
Oh the bloody mess this fight would be. Great fight with multiple knock downs but Dempsey leaves himself to open at times. He eventually gets worn down and caught. There are very few come forward fighters if favor over Marciano. Probably only George and Maybe Liston (and I only give Liston 50/50 shot) I also think Dempsey’s biggest weakness is a very fixable one. Would have to adjust his style to compete today but imo would be a champion with his speed and power.
I think Marciano survives the initial onslaught and wears down Dempsey in what is at time a comical affair.
Dempsey was unique for his time, there was no one as explosive and quick until Joe Louis - a 10 round fight would be an action battle because both men would be coming forward, I like Marciano in this but I rate Dempsey high for his time and the best until Louis.
I've made my mind up. Marciano ends up connecting with a Suzie Q whilst Dempsey is doing his little figure of 8 movement at some point in the mid rounds after a long brutal affair that sees both hurt and probably down. Alot of body work in this one, which Marciano's stamina helps him out. Both had left hooks that would hurt the other as well, but Marciano (due to leaping) most likely has more range and fire power. Marciano TKO/KO rd9+
Marciano would have to get up off the deck to win, but I believe that is exactly what he would do. His constant pressure would eventually tire Dempsey and leave him open to being caught for the KO/TKO
More or less my view. Dempsey I think was without question the better boxer and "on paper" he should be favoured. But he loved a brawl and if he took on Marciano in a slugfest - which I see as 50-50 - he stood a good chance of blowing his wad for the later rounds. So in terms of the style matchup I'd favour Marciano. Of course the actual fight could potentially be a blowout either way and it shouldnt be surprising
