Hafþór Björnsson, former World's Strongest Man, is indisputably larger and stronger than Marciano at 6'9" and between 355 and 451 pounds. He has fought in two boxing exhibitions. One was against a 0-0 novice (a draw) and the other was against a 17-3-1 fighter who recently competed for the English heavyweight title (Hafþór won.) I think the fights are officially publicly available on YouTube.

We might as well bring recent forum arguments to their logical conclusion. Marciano vs Björnsson. 4 rounds. 1950s ref and gloves. Who wins?

Thor would be gassed after just 3-4 body shots. He is not conditioned to deal with a stamina monster like Rocky. The fight would be stopped in under 3 rounds with Thor unable to defend himself wheezing and gasping for air.

Freak shows are as old as the sport of boxing.

There have always been contenders the size of Valuev.

There have always been elite strongmen who tried their hand at boxing.

Marciano shared an era with Ewart Potgieter and Paul Anderson, either of who could have been brought forward as a potential opponent.

Why do some fans of modern fighters, assume that Marciano was only successful, because he lived in Lilliput?

Perhaps Ewart Potgieter had the weight and size to beat Marciano and win the heavyweight title.

4 rounds is not that much man. He can condition himself to go 4 rounds

Why would Marciano take a fight against an unranked guy who would beat him?

    He wouldn't.

Think what the heavyweight championship was worth back then.

If either of those men could realistically have won it from Marciano, wouldn't they have been set up fairly heavily as contenders?

If only for the money, of a failed title challenge?

Obviously 185lbs didn't look vey beatable back then, unless you had credentials!

BTW, I checked out Iceland's active and inactive boxers with boxrec. The result was: "no results found".
Anyway, two athletes (not martial artists) that I would like to see as boxers (more than Hafþór Björnsson) would be: Shaquille O’Neal and in particular Wilt Chamberlain. Okay, they'd need a lot of training and they probably wouldn't be great. But who knows, both were great athletes and Nikolai Valuev wasn't a genius of movement either.

I already know and I voted for Marciano. I just wanted to know if there were any official Icelandic boxers (just out of curiosity).

Dempsey 1238's original comment was that maybe Potgieter beats Marciano.

Your counter was that if that was true, the fight would have been made. In other words, the fact that Marciano didn't fight Potgieter is proof that Potgieter was never a threat to begin with.

But now you're agreeing that Marciano wouldn't have made the fight if he considered Potgieter a threat.

So how does Marciano denying Potgieter a fight prove anything whatsoever about Potgieter's chances? If anything, we would expect Marciano to deny Potgieter a shot if Potgieter was a threat.

My point is that nobody was thinking "gee this is a guy that can beat Marciano, if we can somehow maneuver him to a title shot."

Nobody was thinking "the average size of the top contenders is small right now, this guy can get fat on size alone."

Nobody thought it was worth investing the money of a Valuev style path to the top.

His size simply wasn't seen as being a potential game changer.

Obviously Marciano as the champion, would have insisted upon him having a ranking before he fought him.

It is not the champion's job to seek out dangerous unranked contenders, and to do so would be unfair to the men who earned their rankings,

What kind of matchup is this, yeah the big guy would dwarf Marciano but his skill is atrocious and his gastank is poor. Like im talking he makes Carnera look like Wladimir Klitschko type **** LOL

    Marciano clears :risas3:
