Moore caught Marciano with a beautiful right hand counter. When is Floyd going to hit Marciano with a counter like that? Floyd was not defensive like Moore, he was offensive, toe to toe. I do agree Patterson could floor him like Walcott did, but Marciano will get right back up unfazed. How's that going to work out for Floyd going toe to toe? What about Floyd. Was knocked out 3 times, on the floor vs feather fished punchers. What's going to happen when Marciano lands on him?
Marciano was only floored by all time great punchers, for 2 counts, from there best Sunday punches. Marciano never floored by anyone who couldn't hit hard. Marciano never on the verge of getting knocked out on film, or on bad shaky legs. I think this points to a very good chin
He doesn't have to counter him, his handspeed is light years in front of Marciano's. I'm picking Marciano, but he will have some sticky moments!
Of course. Amir khans handspeed is light years above Danny Garcia. But once he got clocked on the chin he was done.
I don't think Moore is an ATG puncher at heavyweight, and I disagree Walcott was either. Marciano did have a good chin though.
Moore was an ATG puncher at 175, not heavyweight but a very good one at heavyweight. He put a few big men in the hospital. Walcott made the top 60 for ring magazine greatest punchers of all time list. As a heavyweight. While maybe not an ATG puncher, he rates as a very good one. The best hitter Marciano faced. Walcott could really punch, after reading his biography I didn't realize how hard he hit, he nearly killed two men in the 1930s So yes I agree with you, but I stand by my point Marciano was never floored by someone who wasn't a big hitter Marciano has no bad knockdowns our knockout losses to average hitters at any point in his career
Hi Suzie; just a couple of things. Jackson was, quite simply, a 'whackazoid'. Given my limited insight into his career, I'm at a loss as to explain why he rose close to the top. He'd suddenly stop training and go down to the dump and shoot rats with his .22. He had a nice uppercut with either hand but...often threw them both at the same time? :nut IMO I view the Floyd-Tommy first s**** as an anomaly. After Moore, it was obvious that Jackson didn't even belong in the ring with Floyd. As I mentioned in another post, I'll agree that Arch was in good shape when he fought Rock and was complacent and somewhat out of shape when he faced Floyd, however, I'd still pick Floyd against the Marciano Arch until the cows come home. Lastly, no one 'lays out' Floyd, no one ever did! With all the 'china-chin' nonsense wouldn't you think that 2 maybe 3 fighters in his career, given his passivity and supposed glass jaw, would have him face down with the ref counting 8-9-10 'yer out'! Nope, sorry, never happened. I respect your comments Suz.... P.S. Liston's real age remains debatable.
I replied to this sentence. "Marciano was only floored by all time great punchers". I take it you now retract it? We agree Marciano wins, we maybe differ on how easily he does so?
Does not alter the fact that Patterson was handicapped with a a broken hand, hence the more competetive showing from Jackson. Yet Patterson still won.
Patterson weighed in 178 in first fight. He weighed in 184lb in the rematch. Clearly he matured physically from 56 to 57 and put on a lot of muscle. Which is why he was able to dominate Jackson better in the rematch Patterson hit Jackson with both hands flush all night in the first flight and Jackson kept moving forward
Actually I think this goes into the late rounds .I base this on the Lastarza fights. If its a 12 rounder maybe the 11th ? Fifteen rounds where Rocky has more time, 13th round. I don't think Floyd's chin was much worse than Walcott's, and he would be 13 years younger!
Lastarza fought off the back foot. Patterson went toe to toe on the inside How is he going to last more than 12 going toe to toe with Marciano? Difference between Walcott and Patterson is Walcott defeated far more punchers than Patterson did. So what do you make of that?
