It can't have escaped your notice that Tua seemed to fall short, whenever he came up against somebody ranked in the top ten at the time. When a fighter is not getting those crucial wins, it eventually becomes a head to head issue, as well as a resume issue.
I would give him more credit for one convincing win, over somebody who was ranked in the top ten at the time. That is always my take on this sort of issue.
I don’t buy this crap. Rahman and Ruiz were 27 and 29 pro fights into their careers and most definitely close to their primes. Maskaev was only 11 fights in, but he had an extensive amateur career. He was already 28 years old when tua beat him Moorer was past it, but tua destroyed him in 27 seconds. No one did that to Moorer. Oquendo was 22-0 when he fought tua, most thought he beat Chris Byrd. It’s funny how much credit you give Johnson for beating a 19 year old Sam McVea with no amateur experience And only 6 pro fights,...yet you don’t give credit to tua for knocking out men who were 28 years old and had amateur careers of hundreds of fights
Ruiz and Maskaev were men who would be somebody further down the line. Rahman was indeed world class, but you know what happened there. Moorer was somebody who was somebody once. Where is the convincing win over a man who was ranked in the top 10, when the fight actually took place?
I can guarantee you, that 19 year old Sam McVea, would have been ranked in the top 10 when Johnson beat him. In fact I can guarantee that he would have been ranked in the top 5!
Ruiz was already in his prime, and maskaev was very close to it! I don’t see Rahman tua anymore controversial than Dempsey sharkey. They both were exchanging as the bell rang, tuas left hook landed late. Then the next round tua went out and destroyed him
If so, that's more a testament to the lack of depth in his era than to the impressiveness of Johnson's win over him.
