I also agree about Tunney being underrated nowadays. Whether he manages to keep Marciano at the end of his long punches or whether he wilts eventually under Rocky's pressure I cannot say. I'm crappy at evaluating Marciano because on paper he should have lost to the best fighters he faced and instead he ended up bombing them out. On paper, Tunney should win a decision. In reality, maybe the late rounds are a nightmare for him.
I can see arguments for either winning but Tunney had a paper-thin resume for the division and, for a moment at least, looked desperate against an old slugger in Dempsey, who tired afterward. Marciano didn't tire and wouldn't relent. And I'm assuming this would not be a 10 round affair on a rainsoaked canvas. I'll go with Rocky to finish matters in the 12th.
The Walcott fight, but a bit shorter. Tunney does well early befuddling Rocky with his fleet feet and cerebral fisticuffs. Eventually, Rocky breaks him down and makes it rough and ugly. Rocky stops him within 8-10 rounds after losing many of the earlier rounds. It's a bad clash of styles since Tunney lacks the strength to keep Rocky off of him and would quickly run out of energy moving so much to stay away from the relentless bull from Brockton.
Tunney was a gifted technical boxer, always in perfect condition, ATG Will to win with underrated power. I don’t believe Marciano would be able to wear down Tunney and thus he loses the championship distance rounds. Tunney finishes strong to capture a 15 round decision in a close fight
Great point, I agree Marciano finds him in the last 3 rounds or so of 15. I would also argue that Dempsey was much faster coming in that Marciano who might have trouble catching a technician like Tunney I imagine
Rocky would get him eventually but Tunney would have him working like mad for the win. Over a ten, like the Dempsey fights, I'd give Gene a slim chance of a decision. Over 15 tho, I see Rocky s relentless, power shots wearing him down. Maybe, just maybe, Tunney gets to the end and loses a decision, bit like Charles Marciano 1, after all, lest we forget, Gene was a tough SOB
I was on the fence until your post, your outlay of the fight is well presented, and I can see the fight panning out as you say, so thanks. stay safe buddy.
Tunney is an underrated body puncher. What films heave you see him in? Where do your place Tunney, above Charles and Walcott as heavyweight? I do. And they gave Marciano a tough time. It took Rocky on average 9 rounds to put his title opponents away and one of the was a KO 1, when Walcott in my opinion decided not to get up at the count of ten. Again Tunney's chin and stamina were greater than the Marciano opponents ...and he was smart.
Hi Buddy. I posted yesterday extolling the virtues of Tunney's vaunted body punching, as to what films, well the same as you I would imagine, where do I rate Tunney up against Charles and Walcott, not thought about it really, but off the cuff, would have him below Charles, and maybe above Walcott ? your correct Tunney was always in shape, and did indeed possess good stamina and a very solid chin ( KD against Dempsey aside ) as to the outcome of him and Marciano, like some have said, Rocky's strength and relentless approach would be hard to deter, taking nothing away from Genes own staunch belief in himself, none of us can know, but on balance, would feel that Rocky would have been too unremitting and relentless over 15, that's the conclusion I have arrived at, others have not, I respect that. stay safe buddy.
