Tyson had no say in the way he fought. The way he fought was based on the geniousness and intelligency of Cus D'amato.
Worrying thing is that a few people actually believe that , likewise they also think Rocky beats prime Foreman.:nut
There's much MUCH more to this fight than simply saying Tyson by knockout?? We're talking about one of the greatest champions of all time at heavyweight here - this is not Tyson fighting one of the average 80's heavies just backing up from him and letting him bully them. All you have to do is watch some of the more competitive fights fights Tyson had to see that he didn't have it all his own way all of the time. Tyson could be made to think about coming straight in, he could be caught with shots, and he didn't blow everyone away (including fighters who were definitely NOT Rocky Marciano)? You've gotta remember Tyson never fought anyone remotely like Rocky Marciano in his 80's prime - hell he never even fought anyone remotely like Evander Holyfield until he he fought him in the mid-90's! The guys Tyson fought in the 80's didn't really know how to really punch and use hooks and punch inside all they could do was try to poke ineffective jabs and straight shots and his bobbing head which is why he looked like he was from another world to them in terms of being able to really fight? All they ended up doing is following the script of oh the only way I stand a chance is to back up and move a jab and tie him up when desperate (in close) - Marciano KNEW how to fight as well as anyone in history and he fought loads of guys who knew how to fight him back too! Marciano was used to fighting guys that really knew how to fight...and Tyson really wasn't. Tillis gave him some back and look what happened he stood up to him, Mitch Green was able to absorb everything Mike dished out, Tucker cold ride it out Bonecrusher, Bruno etc and a few of these actually showed they could actually hurt Mike had they had the balls to actually go for it and has has been proved on numerous occasion Tyson is prone running out of ideas when things weren't going his way - I've never ever seen Marciano EVER run out of ideas in a fight, or lose heart for that matter, or show frustration - Tyson I've Rarely seen win a fight he was losing or was having to dig deep in and get past 6 rounds and Tyson has lost his chance at that big KO everyone is talking about - Tyson would be in for a big shock at how much better a fighter in the trenches Marciano was than him - Marciano late stoppage in a 15 rounder
Marciano DOES fight better on the inside. I forgot about that. I think Tyson is stronger than him though and weighed alot more than him. That would matter if Marciano wants to fight on the inside consistently for 15 rounds. I personally don't think he would make it 6 rounds.
Rocky is just far out of his depth talent-wise. He doesnt have the speed or size to enforce his style here. His doggedness would only cost him. He was slicker than given credit for, but he was not slick. It would be T-ball for Tyson who would be landing 4 to 1. The problem with estimations of Marciano is that he is seen in the relief of older, smaller fighters... not man killer's like a prime Tyson.
I think when people totally write off Marciano's chances they miss a major point, ie. MARCIANO COULD HURT TYSON. Not only that, he likely WOULD hurt Tyson. He'd land hurtful punches, from odd angles. Damaging punches. So, it's ok to make Tyson the favourite. It's logical. But when you combine everything that Marciano brings to the table, he's a very live underdog.
Agreed. You can clearly see Patterson's style in Tyson. Actually, there are plenty of similarities. Both being Brooklynite's (Patterson since the age of 10) and being petty criminals and both being reformed and trained by Cus D' Amato. Dempsey may have resembled a brawler but he was much more a similar to Frazier with good fast movement and a bob and weave approach to attacking. It was not a dramatic as Frazier's but it was very similar. Dempsey was more like a boxer, who once he tapped you...went into beast mode to finish you. Maricano has been in with hitters with Tyson's power and slicker fighters and was able to adjust. It think he adjusts to Tyson's fast hands and takes over the bout from the middle point on. He closes out Mike in about the 12th round.
Tyson style was D'amatos style he was stubborn like a bull Cus did try to put attributes of the greats into Tyson i.e the smarts of Louis,Aggression of Dempsey, Ring intimidation Mickey Walker/Outside of it Liston,Work ethic Marciano etc..He could see all this..one person who I would have loved to meet
