Same day weigh in, no rehydration nonsense than.

If you transported modern day Tarver into the 50s, his actual ring weight of 185 to 190 or so would be his weight division.

Marciano could have weighed 300lbs and, if he had lived long enough there was every possibility of that happening, would it have improved his performances inside a boxing ring ? NO

Especially if you are facing other cruiserweights:good

It might get a bit inconvenient if you are facing a 6' 6" 240lbs in shape super heavy though.:yep

Orlin fought a different style for starters. He was not a wade in attrition guy, more a potshot/spoiler type.

I just don't buy this. Definitely for some fighters but that's an awful broad brush to paint with, especially in an era of 6-4, 6-5, 6-6 guys. And I really don't think it applies to Marciano with his style.

But you prove my point precisely. Norris was NOT as effective at both weights. He was a WBA champ at cruiserweight, fighting in 6 championship fights. He was in the Ring Top Ten Annual ratings 4 times at cruiser, twice at Number One. He was never ranked at heavyweight in the same ratings. Not once, not even at number 10. He never made it to a championship fight for one of the 4 major belts. These are not the same outcomes.

Then we have to assume that smaller heavyweights like Michael Spinks and Chris Byrd, made a massive miscalculation by bulking up, and that they would have done batter at their natural weight.

Honestly, you can't have it both ways!

Very good point, why bulk up when moving up to heavyweight....

Spinks was clearly more formidable and dominant below heavyweight. We don't have to assume anything there.

Hard to say with Byrd because of his unique elusiveness and speed. Someone like Marciano has no such advantages fighting up.

Those are fantastically different fighters than Marciano, different styles, physical assets and tools.

No you're wrong J , because they had the height and reach to carry the extra poundage. Byrd is 6'1.5" Spinks 6'2" a significant
difference to Marciano's 5'10.5". Both proved they could succeed at the highest level as heavies ,Norris never did.

OK, so would Evander Holyfield have done better against Bowe, if he had kept his weight low?

If not, why does the opposite logic apply to Marciano?

Did they have a magic wand, that permitted them to bulk up, and avoid the factors that would have affected Marciano?

You can't have it both ways!

That's were you are wrong. Norris made the ring magazine annual ratings two years running at heavyweight. Just as many years as belt holders like Tony Tubbs and Michael Dokes featured. In fact Norris beat the same guys Buster Douglas did. Page and McCall. Douglas might have beat Tyson but Norris beat Tucker who beat Douglas.

Marciano would have been bigger if he was born Today but the answer is yes with muscle training it is easy to add muscle and be fit. I have seen guys like Toney and Quawi put on 40-50 lbs and still be fit until James just let it all go. Bobby Cyz went from 160 to 200+ and was muscled at 5'8 ....with the 12 round Max Marciano would be stronger and more relentless and with modern methods better IMO the thing is could he find a brilliant trainer like he had in Charlie Goldman today and that may be a factor
