Tua may have been better if he had stayed at a lower weight to be honest. He weighed in at 210 a couple of months before ruining Ruiz and started his career at 201.

I guess 220-225 was what most would think of as his prime weight though.

    Here is Tua's pro debut:

Another fight with Tua weighing as much as a prime Joe Frazier:

It would've probably been detrimental to Marciano's success if he had come in at 200+ lbs.

He's talking about me which is fine. This is a forum. I agree that his Marciano worship is over the top but now saying Marciano could have been of comparable size to Tua or Tyson takes it to a higher level (in my opinion) . He fought at the weight he fough at because it maximized his abilities. Put twenty pounds on him and he would be slower with weakened stamina. If you are refering to the images of him next to Patterson it is from the television coverage of the replay of the Jackson 2 fight where Floyd and Rocky sat side by side in a studio ... the angle distorted the men on the end as is often the case in such shots. In addition , Marciano was already into retirement and quite fat. He lloked as wide as he was tall ... pretty much what he would have looked like at 215 ..

    hegrant,

your just unrealistic about the whole situation. You keep on deferring the point that marciano naturally weighed well over 200lb and had to cut down to 190lb. This is a big deal, its not like rocky naturally weighed 185lb, he was a natural 220lber. There is no reason with modern training/benefits/nutrition that marciano can't come in at 205lb and not be soft. 205lb is not that heavy. Marciano weighed in at 192lb for some of his fights, thats what 13lb??

I dont see how coming in at a rock solid 205lb with modern training would have any effect on his performance

why? these guys were 5'9-5'11 70" reaches with bone structures similiar to marciano(especially tyson)...with modern benefits marciano could get a wider frame just like mike tyson.

I could say the same about you and your modern heavyweights bias. You critisize marciano in every thread, making me come to his rescue. He doesnt deserve to be critisized like you critisize him. I dont rate marciano as the best, not even close in fact I am more of a Sonny Liston worshipper than Rocky Marciano, its just that Marciano is the one who always gets unfairly critisized and not liston. Your very unrealistic about Rocky. I have read your posts for years over at CyberBoxingzone, I post there too. You have been critical for years. Just because you go to fancy dinners with boxing historians, you think your opinion is not opinion but factual. Well guess what I have gone to dinners with famous boxing historians too, and that means in the words of Jim Mora 'diddly Poo'. I stand by my Opinions 100%

He was 36 years old and around 250lb. What about your boy David Tua? Even at 230lb, he always had some fat to spare, he was not rock solid muscle like you claim, he had fat to lose. he would have been better off fighting at 215-220lb.

Absolutly could have weighed more today....Remember Marciano ran 6-7 miles a day increased it to 10 miles during training and increased to 15 miles weeks before a fight. I was a runner for a while and would lose a lot of upper body muscle but when I went back to boxing and moderate running my upper body would muscle up again. The interview with Marciano and patterson. Marciano weighed 250 but he did not look fat. He looked like a bull. Marciano could have weighed 225-230 and still been cut with weight training in modern days, mabey more but would it have taken from his stamina. Remember years ago, trainers for Louis,Walcott, Charles and Walcott, even Dempsey did not see any reason a heavyweight should not train like a middleweight. In recent years the steriods and weights took the place(only in Heavys) over cardio. When you look at a 5"9 fighter like James Toney and see him fighting at 238, its plain LAZY...look at Shannon Briggs,McCline,Tony Tubbs,Tim Witherspoon,Greg Page, Sam Peter, and Eddie Chambers and how about Areola...Dont let anyone tell me that its in there genes, they could not fight 8 fast paced rds....Who has better, more fattening food than the Italians and there are some BIG (wide) Italians. I love the work ethic of the 40's and 50's but with todays Macky Shillstones the same muscle that was put on Mooreer and Hopkins and such can be added to Marciano and muscle is Heavy., 20-40 lbs of mucle added correctly and Rocky would still be cut...Marciano in the video that Suzie talks about is twice the size of Patterson and he was thick and muscled....

Marciano was a very small heavyweight. In the late 1940s, he sometimes weighed less than 180 pounds. As late as the end of 1949 he regularly weight only around 180. He fought a few times as low as 178. He would have easily made 175 (of course, light heavyweight wasn't where the money was). When Marciano fought Walcott he didn't even weigh 185. Marciano was pushing the times he weighed around 190. I don't care what era you put him in, he isn't weighing much more than that. And if he was fighting at any point after the 1950s, he would likely fight at light heavyweight. It would be suicide to put him in the heavyweight division after the 1960s.

Doubtfull that Rocky could have Tyson prime body or that of Tuas.

Tyson was a physical freak who already had a mans body when he was 13 .

Tua is Samoan enough said being built like a brick shithouse is in his Genes

With the same nutrition and training for each of them Rocky would be more sculpted but not Tua and Tyson would still be have better bodies you can only build so much until genetics kick in.

Ive been in camp with both Tyson and Tua during times in their career where they were in peak condition. Tua at 228 was in excellent shape but his upper legs and calves were freakish looking and looked to carry the bulk of his weight and his arms and upper body looked kind of ordinary. Tyson also had very large legs but seemed wider and thicker overall than Tua. Marciano to me appears to be just a well proportioned big guy for his era, where Tyson and Tua were not well proportioned for their sizes.
Tyson by far the most amazing site in the practice ring, so much speed for such a big guy.

This Marciano debate has been going on so long it's become boring to all of us ... SQ, I disagree with you but have no problem agreeing to disagree ...

Why would Marciano cut weight when he fought in an unlimited weight division?

I don't think Rocky would have thrived in the modern age -- primarily because fights are limited to 12 rounds -- and think there are better candidates for a physical makeover. Rocky was an extremely well-disciplined hard worker who had a good physique -- ain't so much to be done there imo.

I agree Rocky trained intentionally to be lighter and he could easily be 205-210 and be in prime fighting condition -- perhaps more. I think he managed that part of his career well, though, so again, little to improve upon.
