Did he go down once or twice? I've had a look on boxrec and it says Chuvalo looked to have went down in the 4th and was hurt in the second but nothing about two knockdowns. It doesn't really matter as Chuvalo proved in near 100 fights that he possessed a chin of granite especially when you look at his style and opposition. McCall's also got a great chin too,but really Lewis aside what big punchers did he face? He never fought big punching contempories like Tyson,Bowe,Mercer,Morrison,Moorer,Tua,Ibeabuchi or even Holyfield.Plus I've heard that Seldon had McCall hurt in their fight so I don't know if McCall's chin is quite as impervious as advertised,as good though as it is.
He went down twice, it's on film. On YouTube as well, though they may have taken it down. He fought Lewis, who is one of the if not the hardest puncher in history. He also fought Seldon (34 KO's out of 38 wins), who staggered him momentarily indeed (still better than going down), Frank Bruno who was a huge hitter, Akinwande, Williamson and endless of sparrin rounds with Mike Tyson. Remember that he spent one and a half rounds down with his hands below his freaking waiste against one of the heaviest bombers ever, and was wobbled only once, briefly.
"Who did McCall ever fight, huh huh huh huh?" "He sparred hundreds of heated rounds with Mike Tyson blocking shots with his face the entire time." "..." "But who did he FIGHT?" atsch:twisted::twisted::twisted: :rofl:rofl:rofl
chuvalo was never down those were pushes, you wasn't even alive when the fight took place young feller
Jake had the better chin. Rocky could take one hell of a punch though, but he has been down. Has Jake? I don't think so.
LaMotta was knocked down once by Danny Nardico but thats it plus LaMotta was pretty much out of the fight game by then
Good points. I didn't really take into account the second Lewis fight due to his breakdown, but it was quite an effort to remain upright while Lewis (who was a damn huge puncher)teed off on him.Bruno too could whack, and if my memory serves may also have hurt McCall as well but since he's never been down I can't be too critical. Strange that a guy like Chuvalo would go down against Bonavena but remain upright against guys like Foreman and Frazier even though they both gave him heaps of punishment and were bigger punchers.
Maybe he was simply underestimating Bonavena. It'd be easy to against a goofy ass guy like him. But regardless of that the man was still a extremely hard hitter. He had Frazier down too, remember.
Yeah he's a bit underestimated as a puncher. He had Frazier down twice in a round in a fight where the three knock down rule was in effect. It was a near disaster for Joe's fledgling career.
When it comes to the crunch, lets be realistic... Marciano never faught the callibre of fighters that Chuvalo fought. Marciano never faught a truly lightening fast, hardened oponent who was in his prime. Marciano was simply a man with superb fitness, endurance and strength for his size. He was fortunate in many ways, as his style was unorthodox defencively..... Im sure he would have succumbed to Liston, Foreman, Norton, Ali, Holmes, Frazier, Walcott in his prime, Louis in his prime, Tyson and 20 others. Can someone please name a truly unforgetable classic fight involving Marciano....??? A fight that inspires adulation??? A fight against an oponent of relative age, ability, size, desire???? Something on par with Ali/Foreman.... A battle against the odds?? A fight in which Marciano had to 'go to the well' against a man on par with himself???? Fair enough, he retired undefeated, but he retired untested in many ways. A lucky man to be around in that era. When his chin is compared with that of LaMottas, well... speculative opinions will argue. LaMotta was a true cement head. Possibly the most durable fighter in history. After the most punishing battles, there always remained a part of his brain that refused to shut down. He absorbed the fiercest beltings a fighter could withstand, yet, remained on his feet, and defient at a the close of a fight. The punishment he took would not be accepted in todays game, and I doubt he would be granted a boxing licence by many sectors who witnessed the bouts, had it been today. LaMottas chin was second to none. Marcianos fitness carried him, allowing his recovery from the ONE PUNCH knock downs affforded to him by ageing heavyweights.
