Interesting If Marciano peaked against Moore in 55 did he have enough left for one more great effort against Patterson in 56?
Yes, he could have fought and beaten Patterson. But he felt that he had enough. And he didn't disgrace himself by coming back halfhearted. Marciano either trained all out and fought all out or he didn't.
The Charles and Moore fights were superfights. A fight with Bob Baker, Tommy Jackson, Willie Pastrano even a rematch with Moore all would have came before a Patterson fight had Rocky not retired.. and none of them would have been a superfight. Most of what made Rocky "half hearted" was the thought of working like that for a cheap purse after his managers cut. Rocky must have worked out if he made enough "cash in hand" appearances and dinners he could make enough on the year as a retired celebrity than he could with those kinds of fights without splitting everything with Weill. I think this explains Rockys eccentric behavior post boxing career.
If he had stayed in light training I think he would have ko'd Floyd in1956. I don't think Marciano necessarily peaked against Moore once Moore's legs failed in the 6th he was a stationary target and ,as he said himself, " it was only a matter of time before he got to me". I'd be interested in which of his fights Rocky thought he put up his best performance.:think I like him in the Charles fights.:good
I agree with you here...I was gonna say the Charles rematch, but Rocky was more refined and methodical, almost machine-like vs Moore. I think he had evolved as a fighter. Charley Goldman's Frankenstein creation.
That's not true.... Floyd Patterson would have been marcianos next big super fighht. He was being strongly considered for marcianos opponent in 56, because he was a huge draw the biggest out there, and an Olympic champion. Weill wanted the fight because of how much money. And Marciano had a high opinion of Marciano. Now Marciano talked about taking on baker satterfield as a tuneup for Patterson, but Patterson was the fight being talked about. No mention of pastrano, he hadn't beaten anyone of note at the time and was not highly rated https://news.google.com/newspapers?...AAIBAJ&sjid=0JkEAAAAIBAJ&pg=7136,563594&hl=en Guaranteed Patterson gets the fight Read the newspapers, Patterson was next in line. Which is why he got a shot for the vacated title
Did his legs fail in the 6th because he had a machine throwing 110 power punches at Him? :think Anyone's legs would give out on them with that kind of workrate. Moore also said marciano received a long count vs him. Do you believe him?
Moore was a great opponent and Marciano steamrolled him, overwhelmed him, was relentless, and never stopped throwing punches. You can see exactly what Moore is trying to do, wait for openings, set traps, counter, and Marciano never follows the script. He simply doesnt allow himself to be shoehorned into fighting Moores fight.
