He certainly did against Simmons when he was in danger of losing because of a bad cut.Simmons subsequently became a sparring partner for him.
It was Marciano's change of strategy which won it for him, after missing badly with his head punches he changed strategy and focused more on the body. "For the first 6 rounds Lastarza had his way.He impressed with his overall boxing style and defensive skills, avoiding Marciano's crowding jabs ,hooks and counters.Although he never had Marciano in any sort of trouble Lastarza scored points and built up a slight lead on one of the judges cards."He was better than I expected," Marciano admitted. Meanwhile Marciano was stumbling. He tried to score a haymaker that would result in a quick ko but never came close. He manged to land some punches, open a cut near Lastarza's right eye,,and even win a couple of rounds, but he looked awkward and clumsy in the process.he looked even worse when he kept fouling Lastarza.A head butt in the 2ndrd was followed by low blows in the 6th & 7th rds .The infractions drew repeated warnings from referee Ruby Goldstein and a cascade of boos from the crowd." Lastarza began to tire around the 7th rd and by the 10th was all in. Lastarza claimed he came into the fight too light,he trained for 3 months that summer. " I had worked too hard.I worked for 3 months in the summertime for that fight and it killed me.I was losing weight ,losing weight, working hard-and of course I was worried." Lastarza's manager had had a heart attack and trainer Dan Florio took over everything. "My trainer Dan Florio ruined me .He worked me to death.I was ready for that fight 2 months before the fight took place. And Dan Florio,I've never said this before,he ruined me,he worked me to death. He killed me." Both Marciano and Lastarza himself said the turning point in the fight was two left hooks to Lastarza's body in the 7th round. ." He gave me two terrific belts to the body and I was done".Lastarza. "That one really hurt him, because I heard him grunt and after that he lost all his zip." Marciano. "I saw I wasn't getting anywhere trying for the big one and I was afraid of falling behind on points,so I switched to left hooks and inside combinations instead of gunning for his head."Marciano. In Goldman ,Rocky was lucky to have a genius strategist who had a plan B when A wasn't working. In Marciano, Goldman found the cumulation of his dreams a willing student who would follow his tactics and change them as and when directed.
Plenty of protected fighters get shots at the title. I don’t think anyone’s saying he’s Ali. I also think he’d be a great cruiser today.
Based on victories over whom? I think he would get obliterated by most of the top 10. The cruiser class now is at a peak.
Layne and Bucceroni and Brion were his best wins with solid showings against Marciano. I also don’t think highly of any of these fighters as of late with the exception of Usyk. And when you speak of protected fighters no one is more protected then today’s fighters. Look at all the clowns with “undefeated” records that have fought for a championship in the last two decades. Most extremely forgettable.
I don’t know about that. Gassiev and Dorticos are very good fighters but there is nothing on that film that says they blow away Lastarza and Bucceroni. I enjoyed that film. They’re very much good fighters. Thanks very much for posting it. I had not seen it before, Lastarza has a great jab and he uses great timing punching straight from the stance without pulling back. His left hook never missed. And Bucceroni, looking less impressive here is certainly top level. His fight with Jimmy Slade is a great action fight. The boxing press loved those guys at the time. Ray Arcel rated Lastarza as good prospect. I’m sure they would rate Uysk and Gassiev too.
No, why on earth would you think that? I'd reserve that accusation for clowns that think 2 1/2" = a cigarette paper!
