No question an all time pound for pound crusher. Joe Louis said Marciano was the hardest hitter he ever faced. After the loss he said "man can that Rocky swat. Harder than Schmeling for sure." If an 188 pound Henry Cooper almost took Ali's head off you can be sure Marciano had the firepower to do worse. My point, no one was taking the guys shots and was going to be happy about it ...
Just because Ali said Shavers is the hardest puncher he ever face, makes him number 1??? I dont think so, when we have guys like Louis and Dempsey and even Marciano taking that spot. Shavers imo never did the damage Louis did vs Schemling or Dempsey vs Willard or Marciano did to Vingo or LarSarza.
There are different types of power. Louis had the sharp, jolting type of power. Marciano had the bonecrunching power. Shavers had the raw, thudding, type power.
I am intruiged by this statement, and as a boxing fan, I have seen it and heard it described different ways. However, I would like to see a scientific definition of these terms. I suppose if force+ mass times acceleration, then it has more to do with the speed of the punch for some guys, and other guys the weight behind it.
I think that Shavers has a prety good claim for the No1 slot in terms of pure punching power. When a fighter is consistantly sucesfull at world level and really dosn't have any other atribute to explain his sucess (e.g. Max Baer) then you know that he is a real banger. What swings it for me above all is the testionies from oponents. One you can write off but when they all say the same thing you have to take notice. I understand that three common oponents of Earnie Shavers and George Foreman say that Shavers hit harder. It is not just that though but also the graphic descriptions they paint of being hit by Shavers and their body reacting in funny ways which aparently did not happen when they were hit by Frazier/Forema/Tyson.
Ali fought Liston, Foreman, Frazier and Shavers among man others ... that is a pretty serious list of crushers .. he has serious merrit to what he says. Holmes fought Shavers, Cooney, Weaver, Bonecrusher and Tyson, sparred many times with Frazier .. he has serious first hand experience on power .. Tex Cobb said no one punched like Earnie Shavers , no one .... Single shot for single shot, each punch thrown, Shavers was likely the hardest hitter.
It's hard to tell. It wasn't like he was blowing out strong-jawed heavyweights. You have to wonder why he couldn't knock out Cockell or Savold if he was such a great puncher. His punching power would have been more impressive had he lost those ten extra pounds and competed at light heavyweight.
Do you think that his opposition were particularly smaller or less durable than those of Sonny Liston?
I remember reading posts from this fool before I signed up. Rocky could've have lost any more weight. In fact he was naturally above 200 pounds but kept off from the intense training and dieting. This is indisputable. Only a sick and weakened Rocky edged sub-180 and that's telling of some of his worst performances.
Evey fighter has a bad night. He look poor vs Cockell, but great vs Walcott and Layne. I mean am I suppose to see Tyson vs Tillis or Tyson vs Douglas and say Tyson cant hit?? Or seeing Foreman stuggle vs the few lighter guys in his hey day?? For the most part, Rocky got em out in fashion, He is human, not all of his fights are suppose to look great.
why did Levi Billups go the distance with Lennox Lewis. Why did Levi Forte go the distance with Frazier. Why did Willie Mehan hold his own with Dempsey. Why did Bob Stallings with a less than 50% win record beat and dropp a prime Earnie Shavers. Why did Tex Cobb get hit with everything Larry Holmes had and go 15. Why Did Marokovic go 12 with Lennox. Why did light heavy Rondon go 10 with Shavers and Peralta never go down vs Foreman......Cockell got brutilized by Rocky but he kept getting up and going down but he was pounded. Tyson could not stop Tillis and Green and Like Janitor said Tyson and Lewis were fast starters but Tyson only once KO'D a man after the 8th and Lewis never did...Marciano had late power and fighters like Walcott ( who reminds me of a hard punching B-Hop and Charles were not easy to KO...Lasarza had a solid chin and so did Layne....fighters with heart get up for a title shot and Cockell tried his best but he was still murdered
It's safe to say Rocky kept his power as late into a fight as any slugger ... certainly better than Foreman, Shavers, Lewis and maybe Tyson ...Frazier and Dempsey were more like Rocky, extremely well conditioned guys who could still flatten you late as Rocky proved against Walcott, Frazier v.s. Ali and Dempsey v.s. Brennen ...
