Maybe he could be had but not by Rocky, at least in the ring. Wrong style ... in the street I think Rocky, with his torse strength and huge athletic amateur sports background with football and wrestling would have broken Sonny in half.

That was literally it. When Liston was begginging to make waves a number of people were looking at him and Marciano was amongst them. Sonny nixed it. Things might have been very different for him if he had gone with Rocky, Marciano was seen as an untouchable by many of the guys who ended up ruining him.

I can't remember where this comes from, it should definitely be taken with a pinch.

One thing is for sure..Marciano..whether it was a fat, retired Marciano, of a few years earlier, a prime Marciano, would have had utterly no fear of Liston, which was more than most other guys could have claimed, and despite the size disparity and potential outcome, would have been an asset for Rocky to possibly expose Liston as a bully before Clay did.

    You're not the only one.

Also, gotten love the fact that Liston is considered to be tooooo big. The man was barely over 6 feet tall and barely over 200lbs. Not that that's small, but it's not exactly like this is Marciano vs Lennox Lewis we're talking about. They're about equal in height and Liston is 10lbs bigger than Walcott whom Marciano twice knocked out. In fact, the Joe Louis that Marciano beat was taller and heavier than Liston..

Just in this thread alone: (which is not even about a Liston vs Marciano matchup!)

Maybe it's the fact that his two best wins are over cruiserweights. ;)

(the bate is out for McGrain)

I have my hands full protecting Joe Frazier these days...

    In fairness:

    "You're a big guy, Sonny."

Marciano is right. Next to him, Sonny is big. A couple of inches taller, 25lbs heavier. Not negligable.

"Rocky never faced anyone as big/good as Sonny."

Fair comment. In combination of size/quality, Liston would be top of the pops.

I think that Liston's physicallity was very big for his frame. His measurements are of a much bigger man. For someone who is already smaller (Rocky), sitting with him probably did make size difference apparent.

But there's no arguing with 6'1 215lbs. That's what he was. And fine. No need to inflate his size, at all. I think that's a rather good size for a HW. Lewis aside, i'd say all the truly great h2h heavies were around this size (guys Holmes, Ali, Louis).

Very true ...Marciano was much larger than Liston in the heart department , Sonny did quit 2 times vs Ali

True, although i never really bought the "he was stronger/bigger than his 212lbs indicates". If we play that game, then exactly the same can be said of Marciano.

For what it's worth I would give Marciano a fair shot against Liston. Liston never faced a fighter as good, certainly not as tenacious as Marciano until he fought the green Clay, who was only beginning to discover his championship qualities of heart. Marciano would also have some success getting under Liston's jab, using his own lack of size to his advantage. The problem accurately gauging Liston is the very weak era he fought in. Granted, he laid waste to the division, but it was arguably at one of its weakest points ever. And no, Machen, Foley and Williams do not impress me as more than barely b-level fighters.

Exactly the same must be said to be true of Marciano, surely?

Yes, but like others have said after this comment. Sonny had a large frame. So he looked even bigger and stronger than his 210-212 pound actual weight.

True but the difference is Walcott wasn't cheating, Marciano's corner put something on his cut which got on Walcott's fists and then in Rocky eyes. Still showed a lot of heart but I think with Ali people didn't know if he had heart he was this young big muth expected to be destoyed by Sonny.
