See your just looking at the performances they had in wins only and close losses are disregarded... you put a big emphasis on Barrera matching JMM or making it seem closer then the win that occured in a lot of your posts... but never give JMM credit for Matching one of the best if not the best fighter of this decade and possibly winning at least 1... Even in his losses vs Chirs John and Norwood JMM did very well and should have the win over John...

But its all an argument and all things considered it will always be an argument.

Barrera was also my favorite fighter growing up I wore his shirts, and watched all of his fights with my parents. JMM was always my second, but as time went by his skills just amazed me and JMM became number one guy in my book.

Likewise, some have argued that Barrera deserved the nod in the return bout with Junior Jones. I discounted that fact in the my original post so that I was being fair to both combatants. It's true, JMM was very competitive and arguably defeated Manny Pacquiao on at least one of those occasions, but he ultimately lost in what were very close, debatable fights. As a rule, if the fights are that close, I tend to go with the official judging. I felt Barrera beat Morales in 2000 but I don't credit him for doing so. I'm being consistant.

Barrera has the better official victories, and his losses are comparable to Marquez's defeats. Skillwise, I'm not sure how we seperate the two.

    Good post.

I do attribute the fact that Barrera hasn't aged as well as his Mexican contemporaries for the simple fact he turned professional at an earlier age, and was fighting top level competition before both Morales and Marquez. He's also naturally smaller than those two so would obviously find it more difficult to move up in weight and be successful during his twilight years. Still though, all credit to Marquez and Morales for still being relevant on the world stage.

MAB was Roy Jones JRs favorite fighter. He would comment about how great he was every chance he got.

No doubt. Guy was fighting for world titles for like 12 years (although it would require de la Hoya to give relevance to the WBO, which was the first strap Barrera held). He really should have been a staple in any P4P in 1996, from 2000-2007. Although I can't see him being the number 1 at any point.

"I like Morales, always have, but for me he's the best small man I've seen in Boxing over the last decade - Marco Antonio Barrera" - Jones Jr.

Addie I hope you don't think that was an attempt to discredit Barrera.
You know my feelings about the guy particularly in relation to Morales.
Second only to Leonard in my personal favourites.

Marco was a brilliant fighter. I thought he beat Morales all 3 times. If MAB was in his prime, I'd peg JMM/MAB to be a 50/50 fight. I think he has become very underrated as of late.

And Hamed wasn't past his prime when MAB made him his *****. Hamed was never as good as MAB and will never be.

Can't recall offhand; definitely close enough to be a point's shave, and not the screw-job it's exaggerated to be. No more than the first. :good

I'm overdue for another spin of all three, actually. Especially since Mrs. Butt is one of those aforementioned ignoramuses who only caught the tail end of Barrera and think of him as a tentative party-pooper (I think her introduction was the rematch with Rocky :-( - not the greatest first impression, although a fine boxing performance for the purist). She needs to finally see some of the REAL Marco, not just the highlights I've cued up in desperate attempts to make her understand his beastliness. We'll make a night of it! :) :pop

I do remember that over the full cumulative thirty-six rounds I had Barrera quite a bit up on Morales.

 How have you not shown her Barrera/Mckinney or Barrera/Morales I? Poor form, Butt. School boy stuff.

The Tapia fight would be a good shout. Barrera throws some insane combinations in that fight, and Tapia shows his stuff too. Do it!

She'll never sit the **** still and watch "old" boxing with me. She is also finicky about Youtube quality and says she can't even see the punches flying half the time. I do have a Barrera DVD, but fastening her down when she could be doing her toenails or watching the food channel is an issue. If it's a Saturday night and there's a live card on, she'll curl up on the couch and half-assed pay attention - but she only really sits up and takes notice when it's the "pretty" boxers (Mosley, Canelo, Wlad etc.) That could be part of why she's slow to warm to MAB. He's a macho ******* and a ****ing blueberry stud-muffin in the eyes of this beholder...but not exactly what one might call conventionally "handsome". In fact, he's likely not anyone's idea of unconventionally handsome. "Baby Faced" was always a jape, even when he was younger. :!:

She is a bit interested in Tapia, since I've shoved half his life story down her throat during a few ranting and raving sessions and even made her read half his book. That could be the one to get the ball rolling. :think

Mosley, on the otherhand, is a very unattractive man. (no homo)

His standing in the lower weights is set in stone though one of the best fighters from super bantam 2 super feather ever fought all the top guys around his weight and beat most of them.
