Barrera was the truth but back then their wee plenty of skilled guys like junior jones fight is an example. He really schooled the baby faced assassin.

    There was no schooling whatsoever.:bart

Barrera was winning the first fight when he got careless and got caught by a Jr Jones hook. Then got DQ'd cause his corner screwed up and entered the ring.

    2nd fight was very close.

He retired one of my favorite fighters, Naseem Hamed, who was considered almost invincible at that time. The boxing in that fight by Barrera was sublime and you couldn't really but be amazed at his skills, regardless of who you were rooting for. Took too many fights, though, and in too many wars. Should have saved some mileage for the Pacquiao era, would have seen him perform better in the 00s. Remember, by the time he fought Naseem he'd had 56 fights! There's only so much fight in a boxer till he loses his snap and starts to deteriorate. I rate him higher skill wise than Pacquiao for this reason. Pacquiao back then wasn't even that great, he entered the scene and fought depleted versions of Morales and Barrera, they were fighting on fumes by 2003. No way does Pacquiao beat a focused and well conditioned 2001 Barrera.

Agreed. Although I think Barrera is more technically skilled than all of them. Marquez was no doubt a master technician, but was much more comfortable taking the countering role.

Barrera could take the lead or counter with no drop off in effectiveness. And Marquez was more physically gifted than Barrera was.

Barrera is the type of fighter who can win when he's outgunned physically. He beat Hamed and Morales (twice) while being the less physical fighter.

But against Pacquiao? Can a fighter win when he's that outgunned? There comes a point where the other guy has too much speed, workrate, power and chin advantage that skill cannot overcome.

Not only skills, but he had the attitude of a fighter as well. Could be nasty when he had to be, he was tough and didn't take any **** in the ring. Mentally very tough

There's nothing that he couldn't do. At the very least the most versatile fighter of his era.

More like a draw. Still can't get over how Barrera was cheated out that KD that changed the rest of the fight. Fight was close and could have gone either way.

Still, I think Marquez was a little more skilled than Barrera in certain departments but Barrera was more versatile. Would have loved to see a fight between early 2000 versions of JMM and MAB.

Barrera was absolutely a more well rounded and versatile fighter than Marquez. And more skilled as well.

Barrera could stalk the opponent if need be. He stalked Morales in the first fight and got robbed. And outfought in a tactical pocket war in the third fight. He could brawl, box or mix it up all in a single fight.

Whereas Marquez did what he did extremely well which is counter, but he was a master of one and lacking in other areas of the science. He struggled to take the lead.

You also must consider how depleted a 2007 Barrera was compared to the early 2000s Barrera.
