My favourite fighter of all time, Marco Antonio Barrera. Where do you have him ranked in all-time P4P terms? What do you consider his best wins? I think his best win came against Hamed. It would have been the first Morales fight, but the judges scored it differently to the majority of fans. However, his win over Hamed was still great considering he was an underdog going into that bout. He put on a masterclass, and effectively ended Naseem's career. I don't have an official P4P list, but I could imagine him being in the top 50-60. I think his resume is fantastic, and he was an extremely versatile fighter. He started his career off as a relentless brawler and then shown his boxing ability against Hamed, putting on a clinic. He could do it all. A true great. This is a video I edited as a tribute to Marco Antonio Barrera. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2Uhg_k05fQ
Barrera is an all-time great. I don't know if he would make all-time top 50 P4P, but he is definitely one of the top 10 of his own era/generation in my opinion. Look at the standard of fighter Barrera faced throughout his amazing career! Naseem Hamed was established in the top 10 P4P when Barrera beat him, he was a KO artist at featherweight, a beast, a very dangerous very risky opponent for Barrera moving up in weight. And Barrera dominated him in a career virtuoso performance. Because of Hamed's subsequent loss of desire and retirement, people forget what a sensation it was at the time. And Barrera won the best trilogy of the 21st century (aside from maybe Vasquez-Marquez, but I do prefer Erik-MAB personally) 2-1. Three 50/50 thrillers, both men putting it all the line, 2 ATGs, and Barrera coming out with the wins. As if that wasn't enough, but the guy also had wins over excellent opponents like Paulie Ayala (a former Ring fighter of the year), Johnny Tapia (3-weight world champion), Kennedy McKinney, Rocky Juarez, Kevin Kelley, Robbie Peden, and he floored and pushed the top 5 P4P Juan Manuel Marquez all the way in the twilight of his career. Truly a modern great.
Surely Barrera is top 100? Has a better resume than Roy Jones, more fights than Pernell Whitaker, won titles at different weights, and he could box and brawl.
I agree! In my opinion, he has the best resume among the three mab, morales and jmm! I'm not sure if other mexicans will agree.
Arguably. Not sure yet, as I've never personally made a top 100, far too complicated. There A LOT of great fighters throughout the history of the sport. Not only forgotten by most, but generally unknown.
Whitaker has a better resume, but I don't believe Roy Jones to have so. If Roy jones is in your top 100, then so should Barrera. Easily.
you picked the two wrong fighters to argue about Barreras ranking cause those two rank way ahead of Barrera you shouldve picked someone like say Ricardo Lopez.
RJJ and Whitaker are far and away above Barrera in terms of talent and ability, so they are miles ahead in P4P terms. Barrera does have a great resume though, but I wouldn't say it is better than either of those two guys. All three are great fighters IMO.
I wasn't implying Barrera is anywhere near as high as Whitaker, but I don't why Roy Jones would be rated so highly. His win over Hopkins came early in Bernard's career, and Toney was weight drained. His win over Ruiz was great considering the circumstances, but Ruiz is an awful Heavyweight. Aside from that, what other wins are there to speak of? Barrera holds two wins over Erik Morales, and wins against Naseem Hamed, Kennedy Mckinney, Johnny Tapia, Kevin Kelly, and Ayala. All solid wins. Won belts at multiple weights, and had 70 fights in total, which is extensive by todays standards. I think he has to be top 100.
if you talk only about who they fought than maybe Barrera has the better resume but if you only talk about who they beat than Jones takes it.
