ON the upside, MAB's loses to Jones are part of what made him the legend he became. Had MAB not made any adjustments and continued to fight the same way, his career would have stalled a lot sooner than it did.
He's top 50 to me. If he is top 5 of this generation, theres 10 generations over the course of 100 years (10years apart), then he will make top 50. Because if every top 5 of each decade was ranked above him, he would still come out 50th best. You could argue that on one decade there could be 10 fighters that are above MAB but yet on another decade, MAB could rank higher than the no.1 fighter of that decade.
some key comparison: Barrera vs Hammed === Jones vs Toney Barrera vs Morales 3x === Jones vs Tarver 3x Barrera vs Juarez 2x > Jones vs Johnson Barrera vs PAC 2x >> Jones vs Hill (should be DM) :hi: Barrera vs JMM < Jones vs Ruiz Barrera vs ??? == Jones vs Trinidad, Calzaghe, Hopkins while Traver trilogy is joke comparing to Morales, Barrera has no win like Jones vs Ruiz, Joneh hovever beside Toney never fought anybody who was considered a man at his division. So even Jones has more scraps fighting the likes of Hopkins, Trinidad, Calzaghe (not yet) Barrera fought more serious competition.
How about MAB's opponents like Tapia, Ayala, Sanchez & mckiney? Sure tapia was past prime but Tito was far more past i.
One of my all-time favourite fighters. ESPN.com did an all-time top 50 list last year and Barrera came in at number 43.
I've undoubtedly left out a lot of fighters, but let's see how many you can rate Barrera over from this list. Maybe a few, but I seriously doubt you'll be able to eliminate enough to get down to 50. Muhammad Ali Larry Holmes Lennox Lewis Joe Louis Rocky Marciano Jack Johnson Jack Dempsey Evander Holyfield Roy Jones Jr. Michael Spinks Bob Foster Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Sam Langford Gene Tunney Harold Johnson Tommy Loughran Carlos Monzon Marvin Hagler Ray Robinson Harry Greb Bernard Hopkins Jake LaMotta Dick Tiger Ray Leonard Tommy Hearns Mike McCallum Bob Fitzsimmons Stanley Ketchell Tiger Flowers Marcel Cerdan Tony Zale Gene Fullmer Emile Griffith Jose Napoles Kid Gavilan Barbados Joe Walcott Henry Armstrong Luis Manuel Rodriguez Pernell Whitaker Oscar De La Hoya Felix Trinidad Carmen Basilio Aaron Pryor Carlos Ortiz Duilio Loi Julio Cesar Chavez Roberto Duran Kid Lewis Jack Britton Fritzie Zivic Wilfred Benitez Joe Gans Benny Leonard Ike Williams Tony Canzoneri Barney Ross Jimmy McLarnin Billy Petrolle Shane Mosley Kid Chocolate Alexis Arguello Floyd Mayweather Jr. Azumah Nelson Salvador Sanchez Willie Pep Sandy Saddler Vicente Saldivar Wilfredo Gomez Erik Morales Manny Pacquiao George Dixon Freddie Welsh Lou Ambers Sammy Angott Beau Jack Bob Montgomery Joe Brown Ismael Laguna Ken Buchanan Abe Attell Johnny Kilbane Johnny Dundee Freddie Miller Panama Al Brown Benny Lynch Manuel Ortiz Eder Jofre Fighting Harada Ruben Olivares Carlos Zarate Jimmy Wilde Pancho Villa Hiroyuki Ebihara Miguel Canto Pasqual Perez Ricardo Lopez
Exactly. C'mon, that's like some PacDBest "Lewis beat him and he beat him and he beat him and Pac beat him so Pac could beat Lewis!" ****.
It should. If you're rating 20 fighters from 1 decade above the no.1 fighter of another decade, then dont you think its time to evaluate the situation and realise that perhaps you are either overrating or underrating one of the particular decades in boxing? Really you can only compare fighters to what they achieved in their era, and compare them to the other fighters in their achievements in their own era. Why for example should a fighter who was considered THE BEST in his era be ranked lower than another fighter who was perhaps considered 10th best in his era? When you do that, youre just rating one era over another which is far too subjective...not that ATG's & P4P list are too objective themselves.
Barrera was an AWESOME AWESOME fighter. One that will be remembered for a long time. But I do agree with Sweet Pea. Jones is greater. And on an ATG list, kinda by a mile, too. In fact, Jones is easilly a top 50 fighter of all time for me... And like Sweet Pea, Barrera is still only arugably top 100.
