Round 9 Firtha jabs and circles left. Povetkin tries to be a step ahead of him with long sideways strides. Neither has thrown much of significance. Firtha steps in and waves his fists in Povetkin's direction but is not making a serious attempt to land. The referee warns Firtha for grabbing Povetkin behind the waist and initiating a clinch after missing some punches. Povetkin is trying to stay in the pocket, jabbing over Firtha's shots and ducking them when he pulls back the jab. Povetkin continues the pressure, landing a couple of hooks, until Firtha takes a step forward and feints with a big right hand. Firtha lands an uppercut on the inside.
Not at all impressed with Povetkin. Going the rounds with a journeyman. Terrible fight, too. Remember folks it was Summer 2008 when the world was talking about Povetkin being the hot contender to rule the HW division. Now two years later he's still struggling with a random nobody.
Round 10 Firtha is very aggressive, pumping his jab hard and often. Povetkin waits on him, guard up. Firtha lands a nice jab as Povetkin is putting his arm out to measure distance. Firtha continues to lean forward and lands jabs while Povetkin is idling in front of him. Firtha paws with a couple of jabs that fall short but get him in range to trade with Povetkin, and both land some glancing incidental leather. There is a lot of heavy breathing and grunting, mostly from Firtha. Povetkin lands a big right hand that stuns Firtha, but the big man swings himself around jerkily and comes back to grab Povetkin and slam him to the ground hard. Povetkin gets up a bit dazed as the referee rules the slip and tells him to continue. Firtha keeps battling his way inside and roughing Povetkin up. That was a Firtha round, if no other - even though Povetkin's right hand was the best punch landed.
Povetkin looks ragged to me. This is a guy he probably would have taken out earlier in his career. What's going on??
It really is the Curious Case of Alexander Povetkin. Teddy Atlas has ruined this guy. If you told me this is the same fighter whose beaten guys like Chambers and Byrd I'd say you were crazy.
Teddy Atlas is holding a water bottle with a huge straw sticking out and into Povetkin's mouth, while Atlas gently dabs sweat off his face with a towel. It's...a little gay.
Spoiled too early with big money early in his career. No hunger, no passion, no desire to push himself further. The Audley Harrison syndrome. Wins Olympic gold, then heralded as coming pro HW superstar, gets big $$$ early on and then realizes he doesn't have to work and push himself to make money and just rests on his laurels.
