Maidana lets down his fans, refuses to fight rematch against Erik Morales

    By Jason Kim:

Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) was given the offer by Golden Boy Promotions to step in and face Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) for the vacant WBC light welterweight title on Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz card next week on September 17th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In fairness to Maidana, perhaps he had already signed for the Petrov fight and was bound by the fight contract, although he should have put in an escape route in case something better came up like the Morales rematch.

Maidana obviously has his reasons for declining the fight, but if it was because of not being in top shape, it’s hard to imagine how Maidana couldn’t have been in tip top shape. After all, he was training very hard up to a week before his previously scheduled August 27th fight with

    .

That fight was cancelled after Guerrero tore up his left rotator cuff while sparring and week before the fight, making it necessary for him to pull out of the bout. it’s been three weeks since the Guerrero fight went down the drain, and Maidana should be still in good enough shape to fight an aging fighter like Morales you would think.

It doesn’t really make any sense to turn down the Morales fight to take on a little known guy like Petrov. If Maidana did this for his fans in Argentina, that’s nice but it seems like a bad career move to turn down a huge fight for another title agiant Morales to instead fight someone that boxing fans have never even heard of.

If Maidana’s goal is to try and pressure

into fighting him again then he really missed a perfect opportunity to apply some pressure by beating Morales in a rematch and capturing another title. That would have been the ideal thing to do instead of fighting Petrov.

As for Morales, his promoters are still looking for a replacement opponent for him so that he can remain on the Mayweather-Ortiz card.

Whoever that fighter is, he’s going to be a lucky one because he’ll be getting a lot of attention and a chance to capture the WBC belt.

He would've kicked Morales' ass for a second time.

But the dude's in Argentina with his family getting ready for a fight. Probably didn't want to travel to America to fight in a week.

    With 9-10 day notice? WTF??

Morales is not a bum and match against him is not to be taken lightly, or on short notice....He is a Mexican warrior not a slick back fighter,

Maidana said no official money offer was ever made. (On twitter)
Anyway he already had everything in place for his fight in Argentina.

He did say a Dec fight would be possible should both he & Morales come out intact in their next fights.

Soto is a 3-Time World Divisional World Champion that has made 11 title defenses, and has been in 14 World Title fights, and has scared off pacman, Marquez, Morales, Valero, Guerrero, barrera, and so many others into not fighting him.

Maidana cant win a more than 1 world title, and he surely cant win 3 world titles like Soto did:

Soto ducked Rios and an Antillon rematch, it's irrefutable.

I can agree with you here... good thread title.

And Soto didn't look that bad out this time, hopefully he fights a good top person next and shows what he has to get his fans back.

Thats the same thing Soto had last month.

Soto had already had a fight scheduled in Los Mochis agaisnt Alfaro, and you clowns made about 4 threads bashing Soto for not cancelling his hometown WBC 140lbs Eliminator Bout (with the winner to face the WBC Champion) with Alfaro, by not agreeing to fight Maidana with 10 days' notice.

So, its OK for Maidana to decline a 10-day noticed fight, but its not OK for Soto to have declined his 10 days' noticed fight last month???:think

NO he left promotional company and Arum does not fight his guys with non -Top Rank unless he is really trying to protect them

    Like Gamboa-DeLeon instead of JuanMa

Soto, the same guy who won't fight Antillion again, said that a Rios fight was too soon and won't fight anybody worth a damn?

Soto has contract dispute with Top Rank.
TR owes Soto $1 Million (net pay).

If Soto wouldve fought Rios or Antillon rematch, it wouldve autumatically extended Soto's contract with TR, and TR would refuse to pay $1 million and more to Soto, cause Arum is playing games to keep Soto from fighting Pacman and JMM.
