And he never harnessed his raw power better than he has since the loss to Alexander (and, probably no coincidence, his subsequent teaming with Grandpa)

I don't even necessarily think its all raw power

He lands em in the right places, the hooks disguised as a jab or the right that lands high on the head and takes out the equilibrium

He was doing this even back then like in say the Khan fight

True. That's how he hurt Ortiz, too. It was always more unorthodoxy of offense than just sheer wildness. Even before García he was more skilled IMO with more method to his madness than, say, Rios.

It was nice to see him have success vs Floyd with all those odd angle shots

I really though the second fight was going to be close

I felt he messed up coming in looking lighter than he did in the first fight just seemed to pace himself too much early and didn't press enough early on

I think in the first fight he had Floyd decently hurt in round 1 and managed to just keep attacking no matter what. I think the cut had a lot to do with his early success too

I remember live thinking Maidana won 4 or 5 of the first 5 and had Floyd cut and not successful at all on offense and was thinking oh wow we may see an upset

First fight live I didn't know if Floyd was gonna get the win or not on the cards it was a weird feeling cause he always is so dominant

I just think the way he also throws his punches, it's not so much as snappy as it is "weighty" if that makes sense, I think that kind of power tends to carry up in weight better. I mean even if he moved up to say MW, I can still see him being a puncher.

Yes and in the same way that I think a lot of his effect comes from where his shots land as much as how he throws em

His placement is very good. Consider how defensively well schooled Mayweather is, and Maidana was able to land on him in ways that still visibly had an effect despite all the veteran tricks. In fact, cumulatively those first six rounds with Maidana were probably a lot more painful than round 2 with Mosley (and unlike Marcos, Shane wasn't and be to replicate that success)

Maidana vs. Kirkland would be a giddily bumpy ride.

...and for anyone thinking Kirkland's height and reach would be a problem, the disparity is actually less than what Maidana faced versus Soto Karass, Lopez, Khan, Ortiz & Cayo!

Kirkland was badly hurt and/or dropped early by Canelo, Tapia, Angulo, Ishida, Conyers and Berrio.

He was never that good. A shot to million pieces Morales put him in deep water.

Don't know about can't but I think if he's motivated enough he should be fine.

Never understood people who belittle Maidana's accomplishments. He's a proven very solid fighter, more so than one might think given his style and the basic summary of his game.
