    Round 1

Marquez circles left, then dodges a jab by juking to his right. Cusolito steps in with a few jabs, using them as a battering ram with his body weight rather than snapping them. Marquez is able to slide back out of the way of a 1-2, then pushes down on Cusolito's head as he tumbles in, finishing with a slap hook to the side of the head as they separate. Overhands exchanged as they spin toe to toe. Cusolito spits out high jabs, Marquez bending his neck to slip them. Cusolito hangs himself up in the middle, upper half slouching limp as he reaches down to jab the body. Marquez goes clockwise around him, scraping in with short hooks while staying off the jab. Overhand right by Marquez misses as Cusolito drops low and grabs his waist. Cusolito slides back and paws his jab into the air. Marquez crab-walks into him, slipping jabs by jutting his chin out to the side, and winging hooks to the body as he gets close. Cusolito clasps both arms around Marquez's trunk after taking a walloping left-right pair looped into his underarms. They touch gloves while parrying jabs and give each other a little nod of respect. Marquez presses in with a double jab to the guard and drills a right hand to the body. Cusolito steps wide around him and puts out a few jabs, slipped as Marquez tries to work his way back inside with a body hook.

    10-9 Marquez

They were fighting on even terms throughout, and Marquez's huge clubbing right to the face didn't appear to hurt Cusolito that much worse than Cusolito's baton to his nape had done in the 3rd. Cusolito never recovered his faculties, however. He was entirely clueless as to his surroundings or situation, having stood and recovered but then meandering toward his expected stool after less than ninety seconds of action.

    Fair stoppage.

    That was a minor upset.

Cusolito boasted an impressive but padded record of 14-0 (13) and was the hometown favorite.

The first man to vanquish him entered the contest 15-1-1 with only 6 previous kayos.

The one loss for Marquez is to a guy he's up against 2-1 in a trilogy of 6- and 8-rounders. He might be more of a prospect than Cusolito after all.

Angel "Archangel" Martinez is walking out to that lame Linkin Park song. :!: (or maybe it's the remix version with Jay-Z; I've got the volume down pretty low)

I am now officially sanctioning and supporting the inevitable slaughter Maidana is about to inflict on him.

Its just a fight to keep him busy and to showcase infront of his people. Its not like he had a date for December on HBO.

Exactly. With his intended quarry set to defend against Mosley in April, he won't get his crack until summer.

This gives him the opportunity to maintain a somewhat active schedule, possibly fitting in another tune-up in the spring before cashing in on the high ranking his WBA International championship (and two defenses of it) affords him.

If he hadn't squeezed this in, he'd be looking at probably only having fought once between Soto Karass in September and Malignaggi almost a year later.

He doesn't often go more than five months between appearances.

Yeah, but fighters shouldn't fight. It's not their job.

Idle fists are the devil's plaything.

I bet you and miniq would have a lovely discourse on Pong's calendar-spackling habits. :yep

Propitious sidebar for those of us (pretty much all of us who follow boxing) anticipating an eventual showdown between the old amateur rivals in the pros:

Matthysse- renowned for his body punching - took twice as long to get rid of Martinez. Maidana made him crumble with essentially one meaty left.

Maidana would have to come down to 140... Lucas is firmly a natural 140 fighter

Don't see that fight happening any time soon for that reason alone... maybe at the end of their careers

Maidana is looking much sharper lately, and I like what I see. I'm loving his right uppercut now. So short and crisp! His stoppage was better than Matthysse's as it was a definitive KO. The same would have happened for Lucas had the round not ended, but Marcos gets the nod in the comparisons.

Supposedly El Chino is done with super lightweight, but I'm not sure I buy that he can't make it comfortably anymore. He didn't look the least bit drained IMO when making it twice last year (against Morales and Petrov).

    ME WANT NOW!
