Getting lost in all the justifiable build-up to Cotto vs. Margarito II is the rematch between Abner Mares and Joseph Agbeko. This promises to be a good fight and has a decent undercard. However, it is sufferring from the worst promotion of the year; possbly in years. I would have scheduled it for next week. Reasons: 1. Less competition on TV: Sho regularly goes up against HBO broadcasts and in this case would probably have the better fight. A fight 2. No competition at the gate: SoCal is Mexican fight fan territory; many will be watching Margarito. I'm not Mexican, but would have gone any other night in December or November. 3. Local media coverage: There's only so much space in the Sports page. Guess which fight the LA Times and OC Register are going to preview? But, if the fight was next week it would get some ink. Have you seen a worse job of promoting and scheduling a fight this year? Ever?
That's even better. I would have definitely gone last weekend (Honda Center is 20 minutes away) and brought several friends. A good fight over a holiday weekend would have been awesome.
I agree that it should have been last week. I would have much rather watched that than the Canelo fight. Then again, most of the Mexican fans would have tuned in to see Saul, so I guess that negates that as well. Maybe next week then?
They tried to take on TR and ARum threw a fit saying he would even post a free fight. He didnt have to. Came up with cotto v margarito. Bad move by show time and GBP
That would be total disaster for GBP. Two cards on the same weekend. GBP can't even properly promote 1 card, how much more doing 2 cards at the same time? Alvarez fight didn't sell well then divide its sales with Mares/Agbeko card? Anyway, GBP did lots of promotional flops this year.
Eh, Bradley-Alexander deserves a mention as the worst promotional job. At the time, the number 1-2 fighters at 140 fighting off in front of 10 people, in the middle of winter, in an old stadium in Deadtroit. That's quite awful.
