Says Mares couldnt sleep so he called his manager in the middle of the night to activate the rematch clause. Will Mares get knocked out again? At the scene
I was gobsmacked when I read Mares activated the rematch clause with plans to have it take place THIS year. He just got KTFO by a bigger man with heavier punches, and needed the time off not only to recover, but also to take the time in the gym to "(work on) everything, to become a better fighter", as he said in a postfight interview (link below). Clearly either he was acutely embarrassed by the stoppage loss, or someone got in his ear. I just hope Gonzalez wins the rematch, hopefully those 3 (!) controlling options that GBP currently holds on Gonzalez would then go away, so we are spared Gonzalez fighting the likes of an undeserving Gary Russell. http://www.boxingnews24.com/2013/08/abner-mares-wants-rematch-with-jhonny-gonzalez/
Lets assume 5'3" Bantam Mares does manage to avoid getting KTFO early & some how win. How will he deal with everyone else? There is nothing to learn, he is a Bantam with an Orthodox style...Nothing that makes it normal for him to box at Featherweight or 4th & 5th division as his owners had planned for him. He shuld be glad that he can go back to Bantam now when is still young & can make a name for himself there
Thing is if this was Jhonny Gonz from 2-3 fights ago I give Mares a chance, but since he got back with Beristain Jhonny is a much different fighter just like PDL changed under Don Nacho too. When I saw Jhonny outboxing Mares from a distance using his size I hoped Mares would be patient and adapt. Instead, he got frustrated quick and starts to trade on the inside. Big mistake against a bonafide puncher like Jhonny. I dont think this was a fluke and I dont think the other featherweights do the same to Mares. Jhonny could of simply found his groove and could be at his best. Nishioka or PDL would get destroyed in there too. Any 126lber beware.
I'm so glad that some of you guys are not managers or promoters. Kudos to Mares for exercising his rematch clause. To many fighters try to be careful with their careers by avoiding rematches. You must take on the man who knocked you out again. That is a must in boxing if you want to be great. Mares got caught. He realized what he did wrong. He protected the body by falling for the feint which left his chin wide open. He was hit so clean that it seemed as if he caught whip lash. He then traded with a puncher while hurt-wrong idea. Correctable mistakes.
He and his trainer will have to make some serious adjustments in the rematch because Nacho certainly will. I can see Mares keeping his right hand glued to his cheek the entire fight while working his way inside behind the jab. If this is, in fact, Mares' gameplan, look for Gonzalez to once again use feints to land hooks (to the body) and catch Abner with uppercuts on the inside.
A bunch of crybabies. If he doesn't want he rematch, he's avoiding him. If he demands it right away, he's an idiot for doing it. There's no winning with you DKSAB fans.
I think you will see Mares in lots of "exciting" fights in 126lbs...where he gets floored casually by guys who have the reach to do so. The bottom line Mares is 5'3" & he should go back to 118lbs take advantage of the 3 division champion status & focus on 118lbs, where he will have to fight harder, cause even Bantams will come in more determined & make every fight a do or die fight because they think they can KO Mares, its still a more plausible option than hanging around in 126 for more beat downs...Most Feather weight journeymen are Bantams who been coerced into fighting out of their weight cause they had no other option. Mares can go back to 118 take lesser $ & regain his titles there
Mares appears to be too brave for his own good, but I do give him a chance. I think Gonzalez will probably win, but it won't be as easy, at least I don't expect it to be as easy. Mares knows his mistake and he will correct it, but will it be enough? Just Mares got knocked out does not mean he is not a good fighter. Always remember, Joe Louis got knocked out, Lennox Lewis, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Larry Homles, Spinks, Tommy Hearns, Leonard, so very many champions in every division, yet so many came back.............did not hurt their reputations. Go back to the old days, make championship fights 15 rounds, don't judges a fighter because he loses a fight, by decision or knockout. It takes a lot of courage to get into a ring period.
Joe Louis and Lennox are the only Champions in your list to exact revenge the KO losses, because they were strong natural punchers fighting in their weight, not guys moving up! Joe Louis was a natural strong HVY at 6'2" so he was able to KO Max Lennox Lewis revenged KO losses vs smaller Mccal & Rahman Joe Frazier got KTFO again vs the natural bigger George Forman Larry Holmes, Spinks, Hearns & Leonard were never able to revenge their KO losses Think of BOB Foster getting KTFO and pretty much most the guys who fight natives when they are moving up in classes, thats why guys who move up in classes pick on fellow blown up legends who moved up in class. So Pacman & Marquez could have kept rematching each other all the way to Light Heavy weight...without the need for belts, cause they are legends & the Ring will probably give them Belts too, cause people forget that lots of average contenders will stop any guy moving up in weight :thumbsup
