Man, I have to confess these shaky whiskers flew under the radar......this guy knows how to keep his glass jaw hidden. Til now, that is. :yep
Hiding? :-( You are getting complacent and inattentive, Zak! Darchinyan floored him. Agbeko buzzed him. PDL stunned him with telegraphed partially blocked shots.
Wow, you're right. If I'd know all that, I would have had a thread up YESTERDAY about this!!! That's what I get for not following the lower weight classes too closely! atsch In any event, even those of us who are not the most diligent observers of the lighter weights know now....Mares's chin is china.:yep
Welcome to boxing People really need to lay off the chin talk. it gets boring. Most normal people at that weight get dropped by that shot.. anyone who is only a couple of notches below the class of these men get ktfo. The human body...
Just getting KTFO doesn't make your chin glass. Mares chin isn't great but there are shades of punch resistance. He is probably somewhere in the average category. After all, Gonzalez can crack and you either knock him out or he knocks you out. Look at his fight with Vasquez (who had an iron chin despite being stopped), he knocked Vasquez down twice. It was a testament to Vasquez's chin that he got up and stopped Jhonny. Now getting stopped by Malgingaggi, yes you are packing glass.
^ this.,.. people see a knockout and want to jump on the ":hurrr glass chin" bandwagon... he got caught with a perfect shot, regardless of how good your chin is that one will effect you
...me or Zak? I actually don't hate Mares, but it was satisfying to see a vet like Gonzalez (whom I do like quite a bit) halt the kid's momentum after seeing him get away with so many blatant low blows on the way up.
There are definitely different levels of glass jaw (i.e. less than solid punch resistance), and Mares does not have the worst glass jaw I've ever seen, but given the prior evidence IB posted above, and how he was basically laid out at a lighter weight by one punch, it's pretty clear this guy doesn't have the best whiskers. Is Mares' chin Grade AAA china like say, Amir Khan? Well, no. But he's not exactly Jake LaMotta now either, is he?
Yes it was a doozy - but after stepping up and succeeding and remaining unbeaten against world class opposition, the verdict was never that Mares had an iron chin. It had been dented a few times and some alarm bells had gone off - but his recovery was always good enough that he came back and found a way to win. That's why Gonzalez said in the interview that when Mares first went down he knew it behooved him to finish him off quick before the cobwebs were cleared because Mares could then become dangerous or not give him another chance.
