Sergio was a good fighter back then but he wans't the crafty, slick counter puncher he is today. Sergio got a very late start in boxing so when Marg faced him he was still really green....but you could see he was talented for sure. Sergio did well fighting in his country facing limited foes until he got his feet wet a bit more....he's a LOT better now than when Tony beat him.

Martinez hadn't really hit his stride yet, but he was still good. It's just that Margarito has been on the tail end of ass whoopings recently and now everything thinks he's been "exposed", as if he hasn't been in there with top guys before.

How is it a surprise? This was about 10yrs ago! Alot of things can happen in one year. Sergio is much faster, stronger, wiser than he was in 2000. He knocked down Williams which is something Margarito wished of doing. Martinez would destroy Margarito today and get some sweet revenge.

He started late and was slightly inexperienced... that's what green means.

Well, y'see, thing was, nahmsayin, is that Martinez was inexperienced at that time, cuz he's a late starter. Margarito on the other hand, nahmsayin, turned pro as just a kid. So, all in all, I'd say Tall Paul has got the drop on both, nahmsayin, seeins how he went to war with both in their prime, nahmsayin. He do his talkin in the ring nahmsayin', and now he's learnin bout real estate from Mr Peterson nahmsayin, so he be diversifyin, nahmsayin. If Martinez and Margarito went to war today namsayin, I think Martinez would win.

the difference is it was martinez's first fight outside of argentina. he was still coming along. yeah he lost but that wouldnt occur again if they fought a rematch.

and it was his first fight outside Argentina, 4 years since first putting on a pair of gloves. Green? Prime? Peak? Past it? Take your pick.

That actually isn't a good comparison. Floyd's been in boxing gloves his entire life. Williams was in the amateurs well before he was 20 and Margarito has been in boxing since he was a child as well. Martinez hadn't picked up boxing gloves at all(and only did because his soccer coach told him to do it because it would help his conditioning) until he was 20.

It would probably be more akin to saying maybe Librado Andrade being green early in his professional career(I'm guessing, I know he only had like 15 amateur fights I don't know if he was involved in boxing in any capacity before that).

I agree. He beat a good Sergio Martinez. That doesn't change that fact that Martinez had only been boxing for around five years total.
