The key term there is agreed. The fight was "in play" before it was finalized (as is par for the course) and before Margarito-Cotto, which is where Tony gained the leverage to be anywhere near financially attractive enough to lure a top draw away from chasing Pacquiao.

Fights with top guys are almost always 'in talks' it seems. Mentioning another fighter here and there. The whole point is, DLH said he'd fight the winner and chickened out when it was Margarito. Was a tad after that they got serious with the PAc talks.

 

It sucks, but that does happen quite often in the sport. It's business.

There was a fight 100% finalized between then-unbeaten heavyweight prospects Kevin Johnson and Odlanier Solis that was supposed to help separate the pretenders from the contenders. Some of us bought tickets to that event despite living out of state twisted::twisted. Then Vitali Klitschko totally **** blocks by saying "Mind if I cut in?" and scheduling a dance with Johnson just a short time later and like that, on less than two weeks' notice the fight is scrapped (and Solis goes on to fight a hopeless Monte Barrett, which wouldn't have been worth a $2 admission).

I was pissed, but at the same time accepted that when big names (like Klitschko or Pacquiao) get involved, things take on a life of their own.
