To be breief this should be a mass media crossover fight, but in reality isn't Got hardcore boxing fans excited, but that seems to be it. Shame promoters, shame
Can't promote it much more than it has been in this UFC-demented era of ours missing a name like DLH, Dude. I feel yu though. Tomorrows payday and I got the day off but still wanna skip over it to get to Saturday. I hope the build-up supports the fight.
THe more I think about this fight the more I've come to the realizatoin that its not going to live up to the hype and that its going to be a world class schooling by Cotto. Pretty sure he's going to cruse to a wide UD with maybe one or two tough spots...maybe. There is going to be a real difference in skills when these two meet on saturday night. So with that in mind maybe this hasn't been under promoted. Cause over promoting Margarito or over selling him might prove to be a mistake.
What pisses me off is that HBO is willing to go crazy promoting the golden boy vs some chump but haven't seem to gone to any lengths at all to promote this? :huh I mean there is so many angles they could have used: Mexico Vs Puerto Rico The young champ vs the guy with something to prove ect Plus these are two guys with power and asthetically pleasing styles who should mesh well head to head. The thing is, this potentially is the type of fight to put boxing back in maninstream media and yet to me its been underdone in a promotional sense, massively  Maybe everyone just took the phrase "this fight will promote itself" far too literally, and if I were in the Cotto or Margarito camp i'd be asking my promoter what exactly they had done to earn their money this time round. Sage
:rofl You actually think Cotto is good enough to school Margarito without getting pressured and hit? Watch his fights with Maliginaggi and Judah. Miguel Cotto is a great fighter, but he'll be hurt at some point in the fight on Saturday. No schooling.
There's been plenty of promotion. ESPN even had Cotto-Margarito as its main story earlier this week and has produced several articles on the matter. When was the last time you saw that when it wasn't fight night itself? I also have seen several commercials for it on ESPN and HBO.
I'm not sure what you ment by the Malignaggi fight because that was the kinda blowout that I am predicting (maybe not quite that bad). And I'm not sure what you meant by equating Margo's pressure to Zab and Paulie's style because thats not how they roll. Everyone that has gotten to Cotto has been fast. Cotto actually has a very good defense when he's defending. The times where he has gotten hit were when both he and the other guy were throwing a punch and the other guys punch got there first. I don't think that Margo's gonna be able to make that happen. And I'd have to believe that Cotto is slick enough to handle Margo's pressure. Sure he might be hurt once or twice. Most fighters are in a fight. I think more then anything the fight will lack the type of ebs and flows, which create real drama. So even if MArgarito does well it'll be like watching a fight with the same story every round. Fighter "A" has his moments but never does enough to win the round....round after round after round. Fighter "B" wins a clear descision. Cause really thats the best case senario for Cotto and I have a feeling he is head and shoulders enough above the much slower Margarito to be able to pull it off. I will say this I don't think I have actually seen Cotto in there with a really good pressure fighter. All of the really good fighter's he's faced have been boxers or boxer punchers. He hasn;t faced a truely good puncher or a truely good pressure fighter. The truely good pressure fighters are guys like Chavez or Duran, who can add speed and good boxing ability to their pressure game. I don't think Margo's gonna have the goods to put it on him though.
I agree, it's a shame really. If this was promoted correctly it could do some really good numbers, it would also be a great fight for new fans to watch. Despite the lackluster promotion I expect it'll still do good, but not great. Somewhere between 300-350k like you said.
Quite frankly, I'm not interested in what the media says. I'd rather that they keep quiet than cover the fight and act like the boxing experts that they are not. This fight is for the fans.
