Margarito is the MAN!

while i dont think hes a "*****", it did appear he was trying to get his corner to stop it, when he stood up he was looking at them and didnt appear to want to go on. i can see people questioning the heart because other fighters have done the same and been ripped in articles.

 

I am not questioning the heart of a man who went to war like that...He's obviously a warrior.

However, I agree with you that he did quit. He was looking for a way out. He ran away (backpeddling, but it was obvious) before he took that final knee.

Almost any fighter would've been broken by that mental and physical beating, but let's not change history. Cotto had enough. He quit, no matter how you try to twist or turn it.

That's why Diego Corrales has a special place in my heart. He had a troublesome chin, but the man never had a cell in his body that would think about not getting up and fighting on...

I don't think it was like Freitas. Here's my point:

The ref didn't stop it because Cotto COULD NOT continue...
Cotto was not counted out...

To me, it seemed obvious that after the last flurry of punches, Cotto retreated, took a knee untouched by Margo, and looked over at his corner as if to say "I'm done". His corner then waved the white towel, effectively quitting. Cotto then walked to his corner without any debate or objection, thus justifying his corner quitting. To any human being watching the fight, it is obvious that Cotto didn't want to fight anymore.

Do I blame him? No.
Do I think I could've taken the beating he did? Obviously not.
But, do I think Cotto was broken and quit? ABSOLUTELY...

He quit, and he quit in his prime without ever really taking devastating punishment in previous fights. He was broken the way Tyson was...He hit Margo, and Margo didn't back off...

 

i put the blame on the ref ...cotto may have been broken ..but he had no choice but to stop fighting .. the ref shouldn't have even left it up to him ..after the first ko the commentators as well as myself thought the fight should have been ended...

the ref shoulda stoped it ...

Of course Margo is the man now he just beat the man but Cotto is no ***** only the Thread starter is.

 

Cotto may not be one of the guys who can take endless punishment and keep coming without any thought of quitting, he may not be unbreakable, but I feel that Margarito is the only fighter in the welterweight division today who can push Cotto to that point. Margarito was just a force of nature. Never backed off, never stopped coming, never stopped punching, took Cotto's best shots over and over again, and did it all almost nonchalantly. I'd still pick Cotto over any other fighter at 147 today.
