That's why I said "not gonna disagree with him".

My point was that he took those punches better than most of his opponents because of his toughnes.

Willing to bet there are some Cotto victims who might have a different take on this!

Shane and AM have been down in fights. If they both say he has a decent punch, they are saying that Cotto doesn't punch as hard as advertised. Quintana will say Cotto punches hard, but Judah said Cotto never hurt him and that the low blows bothered him more. I believe A.M. Imo Coto is a decent puncher, but he only has one power shot which is the left hook. He has no right hand. A.M knew this...

And AM is big too, for his weight class.

Not tall and lanky kind of big.

More like solid, huge kind of big.

In retrospect, Margarito obviously takes a lot of punches to head. Perhaps because it was such a target was the reason Cotto kept throwing? Or maybe he felt that by trying to land to the body he was making himself more open to Margos assaults? I think that had something to do with it. Going to the body you leave yourself more open, and after that second round where he was throwing hooks to the heart and ribs and liver and Margarito just got the better of him, he started throwing upstairs, which enabled him to keep his guard up and catch some of the punches.

Hmm, I'll have to rewatch the fight again.

Williams is more of the tall, skinny and lanky boxer type.

Cintron is a physical specimen, solid and chiseled like an action figure.
But he's not as mentally and physically tough as AM

Are they too big for the weight class though?

Antonio Margarito looks hard as hell to me. The way he is built, not that he so incredibly cut, but his body just looks like it has no softness anywhere to it, nothing that can be hurt. Even his face looks hard. Just muscle over bone and nothing else.

I agree, I think Cotto was fighting defensively to the point where he didn't want to risk opening up to the mid section. He felt exposed, and probably would have been, if he got himself into position and tried to get any work done down there. Cotto looked to be playing it pretty cool, but to me he was fighting scared. He was extremely uncomfortable having to deal with Margarito. I'll be curious to see what Cotto chooses to do in the rematch. To me, this is a bombshell from Margarito that he isn't concerned about Cotto's punches. That doesn't bode well for Cotto's chances when they fight again.

Yep, you're right. Cotto mostly gets the damage done by going there.

Marciano was good at going to the body too. People forget about the way Tyson would sometimes go to the body too, and then connect immediately with a devastating hook or uppercut. The great fighters use everything at their disposal.

Under the current boxing rules, they are not.

Once you make weight in the weigh-in the day before the fight, you are OK.

Cotto is a big Welterweight himself. Manny Steward thought that Cotto was bigger and more powerful than Shane Mosley - and Shane is two inches taller. Also, when Margarito went up to 154 he didn't look good. He was weak and skinny, and his ability to both take and give damage were much different. Margarito, to me, is clearly a 147 fighter. Cotto was a monster at Welter until Margarito came along... Now Margarito is Godzilla, apparently.
