    Ah OK.

I meant to say that he was exceptionally big for his weight class.

People forget that AM is a legit ww and that Cotto came from 140. As long as you make weight, you aren't too big for your division. AM hs been making 147 for years. Even going to 154 and back down to 147. Cotto imo is stuck in between making 147, and still being height wise a bit too small, and too heavy for 140. AM is about the average height for ww. Berto will find it difficult to beat guys with height and reach at 147 also. Of course skills, determination, and desire can always overcome...

Cotto is built extremely solid, Steward didnt just say that for effect. Cotto may not punch with 10 power, but he is very strong overall physically and he does have excellent stamina. In a clinch he is going to be stronger than most his opponents, and with the exception of Margarito, there isnt anyone at 147 who has his physicality at imposing himself on an opponent.
Margarito is not a multi-dimensional fighter, but he he excels at what he does. Comes straight foward into his opponents and never stops throwing, and you cant hurt him. Clottey was much more effective covering up with his very tight guard and counter punching. And he lost, although I know his hand may have played a part in it, but regardless he was outhustled by Margarito and ended up taking a lot of punishment.
then again Margarito started slow in that fight, something he ceased doing after the Williams fight, which has obviously been a very smart move on his part, as he has dominated from the outset.

Cotto simply doesnt have the style to beat Margarito

    Godzilla? :D

When he started, I thought Cotto was solidly built, thick guy for his weight class.

I was thinking that that was probably what Tyson would have looked like if he was around 6'3, where he was near eye level with his opponents. Cotto was a hard guy to fight.

But going up divisions made his build seem smaller, in comparison.

I was taken aback after seeing the weigh-in pics before the Cotto-AM fight.

The height, build and body structure difference was big.

    Good post. Definately agreed, MJ.

Cotto is 5'7, but he's a stalky, powerful dude. Both Margarito and Cotto weigh in around 157 for their fights, so in actuality Cotto is carrying alot more muscle and mass than Margarito, who is 4-5 inches taller, but the same fighting weight. In that sense Cotto is the bigger man.

People are tripping on the height or the alleged size difference now, but before the fight they were the "same size." You couldn't convince anyone picking Cotto that Margarito was too big for him.

I also picked Cotto to win that fight, because I have seen more of his fights, I have seen how hard he hits and how quick his combos are.

I have only seen maybe 2-3 AM fights before that, and even if I thought he was big and strong, there were doubts in my mind on how he can take Cotto's punches.

But the weigh-in pics gave me a bit of a clue about what Cotto was about to face that night.

Ok, but again, what it basically comes down to is the fact that Margarito is taller. That's it. Margarito is not bigger than Cotto, they are the same fighting weight, height is the only difference. At the weigh-in the height difference was apparent, but Margarito didn't win this fight with his height, he won this fight with his durability and his punching power. It wouldn't have mattered if Margarito was 5'3. Margarito never used his size in the contest, he just came forward and threw - if anything Margarito being such a lumbering oaf made it easy for Cotto to score and get away, and hard for Margarito to land punches and do damage. The "size" was an advantage for Cotto in this fight, in actuality.

But I know what you mean, Cotto looked like Margarito's son at the weigh-in.

I actually picked Margarito to win the fight. Not because he was more skilled or that he was Mexican, but I knew he had the better chin and his brawling pressure style was something Cotto would have a hard time dealing with. During the Torres fight Cotto was hurt, but Torres was a more limited fighter obviously with not so hard a chin, but he did give Cotto some problems. Margarito I knew had the strength to back Cotto up, and after watching the Clottey fight, he also could take Cottos punches.
My thought was if Cotto could keep Margarito off of him, but he couldnt. Margarito doesnt get tired, and he never stops throwing. Cotto is an excellent boxer-puncher, but he couldnt avoid Margarito shots forever, and he likes to brawl himself.
He put forth a great effort though, but Margarito just ****ed him up in the end.

Margarito treated Cotto's punches like some kind of vaguely annoying mist.

That was great to watch. Like I said before, in the 2nd round when Cotto tried to go toe to toe and Margarito hurt him bodyshots right after Cotto had landed his own and he got that look on his face 'You have got to ****ing kidding. It didnt hurt him, Oh ****".

No one at 147 is putting Margarito down.
