no cotto isn't and never was a vicious puncher, he has decent power and a good accumulative effect on opposition but apart from that no he isnt a power puncher like hearns, trinidad etc. Margarito probably was refering to fighters like santos and cintron when he said i've been hit harder

I think people are taking this statement a little to harsh. Margarito is not discrediting Cotto as a former champion or stating he is not a good fighter; he simply stated his opinion based on his experiences in the ring, in which he stated he's been hit harder. It is likely he is telling the truth.

Lets put the facts on the table. Where is this statement coming from? Margarito. When was the last time Margarito was hurt by a welterweight? It doesn't happen to often. The guy has a iron chin, not unbreakable, but a good chin.

To get an honest assessment of whether Cotto hits hard, you could ask all his other opponents, including those 80% of them that were ko'd or tko'd. Whether they were TKOs, didn't want to continue, or whatever, the point is he created the result with his fists.

However, lets look at it from another perspective. lets take a 360 on this and talk about WHAT if Margarito and his camp are using these type of statements for tactical reasons. In my opinion, it would an be intelligent strategy to do so. If they knew a Cotto rematch was possible in the near future, it would benefit Margarito to make those type of statements. I believe this would serve as an excellent strategy to discourage Miguel Cotto and get into his head. Imagine being Cotto, thinking you hit this guy with your hardest shots, and you then later hear from the other guy that he expected to be hit much harder and wasn't impressed with your power. That could be pretty discouraging. I know its a bit far fetched, but in my opinion, it is possible.

Another possibility could be he just tired of people asking him whether he got hurt in the fight, bringing up the fact that he got hit so much. To downplay the fact that he ate so much led in the bout, he could be understating Cotto's power.

Or maybe, he was simply asked to asses Cotto's power.... and he shot forward his opinion.

In your argument lies a question for me, and that question is if I believe Cotto to be a big puncher in the welter weight division. The answer to this question is a resounding yes. If you don't share this opinion then we will just have to agree to disagree but I can't fathom how you or anyone else can dispute how devastating Cotto's left hook is. Re watch the Gomez fight and watch the left hook/uppercut that put Gomez down. Watch how he reacted to the punch. Correct me if im wrong but Gomez has never been down and was previously in with much bigger and stronger fighters during the contender. Although Cotto put on a boxing clinic, the accumulation of punches isn't what put Gomez down, it was the the force and accurancy of the punch. :deal

Your taking my statement out of context. You have to read both of our previous posts to fully understate. I'm certainly not saying that any fighter who stops any other fighter that has never been previously stopped would then be considered a big puncher.

Yeah, and...... Cotto didn't sign, remember?? He put on a huge delay. Anyway, if you want to be technical about this I picked Margarito last year.

It was a great shot on Gomez, although the secret to body punching and putting someone down on a single body blow is placement, not power. They were good hard shots, but what he did to Gomez overall was about class, IMO, more than it was about Cotto being the heaviest hitter Gomez had seen. Gomez even said that Cotto wasn't the hardest puncher he'd been in with.

 Yeah, I think Margarito is gonna stop him in the mid rounds. I think he took it easy on Cotto from the beginning. I feel he will be on him from the start and get another stoppage. :good

I agree, Cotto doesn't know what he's getting into in a rematch. That wasn't nearly the best Margarito he saw the first time. It could end much sooner if Tony is firing on all cylinders from the opening bell.
