Why is Margorito giving up his belt. He just won the title and he is going to fight Cotto in July. There is plenty of time for a mandatory. I just read over at fightnews.com that the fight is going to take place at the MGM Grand Resort & Casino, Las Vegas not MSG.

The ticket sale is on this Thursday!

    Press release quotes

    COTTO
“I am thrilled to finally be fighting Antonio Margarito, in the biggest fight of my career, in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world. I am a fighting champion, which means not only staying active, but staying active against the best fighters man enough to stand up to me. Like Shane Mosley and Zab Judah before him, Antonio Margarito represents the biggest challenge of my career. And like Mosley and Judah, Margarito will leave the ring second best. I can’t wait to get to him.”

    MARGARITO

“I have wanted this fight against Cotto for so long. I am going to make that ring a pressure cooker for him. I will be in one gear for our fight – forward. I will wear him down, break him down and knock him out. July 26 can’t come fast enough for me.”

i know cotto should start favorite........and rightly so, cause he is more technical than margo.

but i have been dreaming about this fight for years, and something always told me margo would win this. he seems more durable and i just think his power and volume will wear cotto down and stop him late. he is the bigger man and i think this will tell.

Cotto has never had a problem with bigger fighters, he's solid. Margarito's size makes him easier to hit.

Margarito said in an interview recently that he's going to pressure Cotto like never before and will eventually break him down with those rock hard body punches till he eventually TKOs him late.
Don't think it'll happen but we'll see, definitely a tough close fight. There is no way in hell either fighter will have a quick night.
    Voting for Cotto by decision.

Cotto by UD, it will be a tough fight for him and it will test his abilites to the max. I will put him #1 on the welter division and move Floyd down.

    BOXING ODDS ARE IN!

Miguel Cotto is the heavy favorite at BWin.

Miguel Angel Cotto (PUR) 1.44 or -227.27
    X 23.00 or +2200.00
Antonio Margarito (MEX) 2.75 or +175

Okay guys... as Mayweather is now officially a retired pro boxer, this fight should be considered as the fight for the true WW championship!

-Mayweather was The Ring and the lineal champ however everything is vacant now
-Cotto is the best champ at WW in this new situation, a legitimate P4P-er with a great resume and an undefeated record
-Margarito is still the IBF champ, now the legitimate no2 in the division... of course his title will become vacant but it dosen't matter: no1 meets no2 in July 26
-WBO champ is Carlos Quintana whom Cotto has already defeated in brutal fashion...

So... everything points to consider this great WW showdown as The Battle/La Batalla - for the true welterweight championship!

Should The Ring magazine recognize the winner as their New Champ and the boxing world as the legitimate/lineal WW champion?

Regardless of Floyd retiring, the winner would have been the WW Champ IMHO anyway.
