Let's not jump the gun. The guy's got a right to negotiate to his best advantage. If he doesn't negotiate successfully and overcooks it, it's his loss. Let's judge him on his choice of opponent only once he signs a contract.

I'm not judging, just stating facts that there is no one available better than Mosley right now.

Clottey would be good, or maybe stepping up to 154...Which would also be dangerous being that Margo would lose some of his advantage. There are fights out there for him..The problem is he has learned and he isnt going to take any risky fights pre Cotto II.

There is a shot that even Arum will diss Marg for this.

If this is not just part of the negotiating process to get a better deal against either Cotto, Williams or Mosley next, then you are right.

Well, the public doesn't work like that. Cotto was a rising star, but he didn't automatically absorb all Shane's star power when he beat him. It's not like when the immortals in Highlander behead each other and absorb each other's power. Shane Mosley has been a household name for a long time, about as deeply entrenched in people's consciousness as Oscar and for about as long - both planted their roots in a decade when the sport was still a bit more popular and less fringe than it is now. Had Cotto continued his winning trajectory for a couple of years, including beating Margarito when they met, he might have developed that sort of star power. He wasn't there yet. As far as the general public is concerned, Cotto beating Mosley is a reason to perk their ears up and say "What's this now? Some guy beat Sugar Shane?". That does not mean that Margarito beating Cotto causes them to perk their ears up and say "What's this now? Some guy beat Junito?". Cotto could beat Shane in a rematch, and Shane would still be a bigger star in terms of name recognition until Cotto had been around for a while and put together a really consistent resume at the top level long enough to dig his way into people's memories. Right now, from a business perspective, regardless of who's actually better head to head or what the diehards think, Mosley is a bigger star than Cotto and Cotto is a bigger star than Margarito in terms of casual fans' willingness to shell out PPV dollars. Cotto built some glory off Mosley, and Margarito built some off Cotto - in the eyes of those who follow the sport closely. In the eyes of the average schmoe, Cotto has beaten a name they recognize and Margarito hasn't directly done so. That's why Margarito isn't big enough a fight for Oscar right now. He may be 'the man'; hell he could unify every belt at 147 and clean out all the young up and comers, but momentum alone doesn't cut it. The recipe is momentum + time; and the only shortcut is momentum + a major coup over an established household name. Not saying this is right, but it's the way the public works, and that's what people (like Oscar) look at when making business decisions.

Margarito wasn't the mega-star who quit instead of taking his beating like a man, so you Cotto fans better not talk about pride and "true fighters".

Moving up to 154 is out of the question, he refused to do so after yet another offer from someone that beat him claiming that guy should move down if "he wants it"(ironically you would expect the loser to want it more especially one hyped as a legacy seeking mammoth who cares less for money) yet he had no trouble telling Oscar he will move up for it.

Clottey seems to be like a good opponent, if he takes on him then I can't really complain as it's a good fight and a risky one.

He won't make anything better than the Williams offer, one major win doesn't automatically bring out the $10million+ offers.

He won't. He got greedy. Let's not hang him before we know exactly who he signs to fight next.

That is the point that im making...Margo has options. If he was turning down a fight with Mosley then he better take a fight that is worth more money. Stylewise I have always thought that Margo is made to order for Shane, he would stand right in front of Shane and try to work him over with much slower hands.

I know that Margo isnt going to move up in weight unless its for a fight with Oscar, too risky to fight bigger stronger fighters being that its 50% of the reason that he has been so good at 147...I know the Margo fans would be pissed about this but the truth is Margo hasnt done well when fighting big fighters in fact when you think of the bigger fighters that he has faced he has a less then average record. Lost to Williams, lost to Jones, Lost to santos drew with Santos beat Clottey that is 1-3-1 vs the best big welters and jr middles that he has faced.

Doesnt matter who he signs to fight next . . . HE disrespects a legend of the sport in Mosley by saying he "pissed his pants" then when Mosley accepts the fight Margarito goes MIA for 2 weeks then comes out and rejects the deal... Thats as low as it gets if he hadnt talked **** about a legend it wouldnt be so bad but he said what he said and now can cop the wrath.... One good fight doesnt make you all that Tony so respect proven legends of the game, dont claim they are "pissing their pants" and then go MIA !

tony has really gone down in a lot of people's eyes he is no position to negotiate with a legend like mosley

he is coming off a great win against cotto, wait a minute the same cotto that was just a tad overrated, tony needs to bite the bullet and accept the 2 mill

I don't respect Tony because he's a paragon of virtue, a good negotiator or an intelligent and wise man. I respect him for performances like the one against Cotto, for his toughness, courage and will to win in the ring.

All of the reasons for criticising him in this thread miss the point for me.
