No one knows for sure, only Margaito and Javier Cepillo or whatever his last name is.

"this is a modern boxing KLASSic"- Max Kellerman.

i think so because margarito started to win the middle and later rounds when his handwraps was getting sweaty and rock hard

well cotto made him look childish and slow for the first 6 rounds making margo miss like he was pernell whitaker at some point. but then margo hit him with a brick and then chased him with a brick for 5 rounds so this fight shouldnt be called margo vs cotto.

its called cotto vs margao + brick

you could tell with the look on cotto's face when he started to get hit, every shot was getting harder and harder and taking more out of him

If you go back in time (the Johnson fight, post Williams loss), it is pretty evident that Margarito's power jumped. He barely hurt Williams until attrition issues took over late. Yet he bombed out Johnson fast, walked through Cintron and landed a few power shots on Cotto to end the night.

The disturbing thing about the Cotto fight is how much damage Cotto took with Margarito landing very little. The first big right hand Margarito landed busted Cotto's nose along the ropes. Then with the lack of oxygen, Cotto slowed down and ate a few uppercuts and more right hands to lose the fight.

We all thought that it was just Margarito being heavy-handed. It wasn't. His power was augmented by illegal hand wraps and even that little extra bit of stiffness makes you hit a lot harder. Maybe he does have a good amount of strength but his posture is usually horrible and he throws a lot of off balance punches which don't equate to natural power.

It smells a lot like Trinidad's loss to Hopkins when Nazim found him out too. Both the physical loss of enhanced power and the psychological loss. Hopkins went on to dismantle Trinidad at the height of his career. Mosley went on to dismantle Margarito at the height of his career. Neither of these guys were the same after those losses.

ye i agree logically if he had been cheating, that would be when it started. but equally as logically is the disbelief he couldve continued for so long

I go back and forth on the issue a lot. Truth be told, maybe we'll get a better idea when Margarito fights more in the future, if he still dismantling guys when we know he doesn't have a weapon in his gloves(safe to assume his wraps will be scrutinized more than anyone in recent memory) then it becomes more possible he didn't use anything against Cotto.

It's hard to get a read on all of it because he fought in different states and had his hands wrapped in front of different commissioners and trainers.

Sadly, we'll never know for certain unless Margarito publishes a tell-all book after his career is over.

    This.

Another maybe not so valid issue i want to raise is why did no-one notice the wraps at the end of the fight?

It is believed his wraps were supposed to harden with oxygen and sweat.

With this, Margarito removed his gloves at the end of the fight, but did not seem worried by the prospect of having the now hard wraps found out.

Surely someone would have noticed? Did he shake hands or anything? I cant remember.
