It had only just dawned on me how hard of a fight this will be to determine. Knowledgeable boxing fans would have to pick Cotto. He has defeated the better opposition and is clearly more technically refined than his future opponent, Antonio Margarito. However, when all things are considered, this fight could go either way. Miguel Cotto, if he is going to defeat Margarito, does so by outboxing him for 12 rounds. I see absolutely no way that Cotto would be able to stop a guy like Margarito, with his energy levels and ability to take flush shots from a puncher like Cintron without flinching. It's true - Cotto can bang - but he doesn't have the firepower of a Cintron, so I don't anticipate him putting any dents on Margarito. Cotto needs to stick and move, fight a very similar fight to the Mosley fight. He needs to throw shots, and come back out of range, and then wait to counter with right hands. If he makes this an inside fight, I don't see him outlasting the taller frame of Margarito. Margarito can only win on a stoppage in my estimation. But this is very possible, even against a fighter of Miguel Cotto's caliber, a fighter who I rate very highly myself. However, one can not deny the fact that Cotto has been hurt plenty of times in his career. Zab Judah wobbled him several times, as did Torres. The man doesn't have the greatest of chins, despite never looking hurt against Mosley. Still, he has shown weakness in his chin before. I'm not saying it's china, but I am insinuating that Margarito can hurt Cotto, whereas I don't think Cotto can hurt Margarito. Still, if Antonio wants to win, he'll have to rough the fight up, and get on the inside, and throw uppercuts to his body and head. Outwork Cotto, tire him, and there is a possibility of Cotto getting stopped on an accumlation of punches. I say a possibility. I pick Miguel Cotto to win via UD, outboxing Margarito from range much like Paul Williams was able to do. Still, Cotto doesn't have that kind of reach, so he'll have to rely on his superior speed to stick and move. I hope this fight happens. It'll be a great spectacle, and not one that we can garuntee a victory for either man. Opinions?
i tend to agree with most of what you say. but i disagree that cotto doest have the firepower of cintron. he might not have the one-hitter quitter shot that cintron throws but cotto is a much more punishing puncher than nearly all other welters. his range/speed have been improving each fight so i see him as a solid favorite..but i also see the possibility of getting caught by a margarito flurry and being stopped aside from that i dont think margo can box with him
Good analisis on this fight but I have to add something... I agree with you that Cotto would not hurt Margo with punches on the head but what about the accumilation of body punches?? From Margo's stand I think that an inside fight could go either way since Cotto has the shorter hands while Margo will have to somehow use some kind of distance in order to be effective. Normally a taller fighter has trouble to come down while a shorter fighter has always practice with people that are similar or taller than them and consecuently are more efficient. As you, I can't wait for this fight as anything can happen but I believe that Cotto has more boxing skills overall than Margo. Pounching Power- we can say that they are both equal. Chin - Margarito Speed - Cotto Foot Work = Cotto Reach = Margarito (althought he likes to fight on close range in which this doesn't need to be an advantage) Heart = Both men Defense = Cotto Winner = BOXING!! Although it will be a much better story if Cotto wins!
I like this fight, think its going to be a great fight. I think its better for boxing if Cotto wins because Margarito seems like he just isn't as marketable for some reason, but leaning towards Margarito in this fight. I just really think Cotto is going to go to war all out for twelve rounds and is going to lose because Margarito is just a ****ing monster.
A large part of the reason he's not "marketable" is because the biggest names refused to get in the ring with him. Winky and Vernon were not marketable until Shane gave them a shot.
Yeah that's a good point. You would just think that the casual fan would love him do to his round one KO's on undercards. You think a guy like that would just be lapped up by the public, but I guess he's not in the ring long enough for anyone to really remember him.
Hardcore fans respect this guy as much as anyone. . . its the casual fans who dont know the sport as well - they look at his record and think that tells the whole story, of course it doesnt. . . they dont recognize any one of his opponants names - they dont realize how long this guy was ducke by the top names.
I posted this on another thread. He really does rearrange peoples faces. I've never seen anything like it - Margarito better KO Cotto quick or learn some serious defensive skills overnight because if he doesn't he will have the best facial makeover that Cotto has ever done in his career as a surgeon. Think about all the quick fighters Cotto has already faced consecutively. Malignaggi, Judah, Mosley and Quintana (not quick but slick) He has dealt with their speed fairly well and has been able to avoid from getting blasted by their firepower even at the speed that they throw it at. Margarito is not even close to their speed, And to think that If Cotto hits Margarito to the body and slows him down even a hair slower than he already is, My god this will be another absolute slaughtering by the hands of Cotto.
I'm a big fan of his, and I'm putting my money where my mouth is with my boxing buddies. I hope the PPV does some big buys and the man makes some serious dough finally!
He finally got his shot at a top name. . . so that in itself is a win for the fans. He might lose but I suspect even in a loss he will dish out a shiitload of punishment . . .but that shouldnt be good enough for him - he needs to win to get his name to the status he wants so bad. God bless both these guys, Cotto and AM . . . they are the kinda fighters the sport needs.
? :rofl This fight might be so extremely one sided and it depends on 1 thing. If Cotto can get respect from Margarito from the early rounds with his own accurate precise power punching than Margarito will get SCHOOLED and horribly beat down. BTW They're using 8oz gloves and well if Margarito slows down even a bit he will get ****ing molested like a child. You will realize my friend what differences in boxing skills play in a boxing fight. Margarito is a tough mother ****er but he is going to be taken to school boxing 101 style
