So should we ignore the most recent piece of evidence we have?

This, combined with your post just after it, are points well taken. Quintana was definitely getting tired later on in the fight, but he still had the energy to mix it up with Williams a bit on the inside and hold/clinch to slow the pace down to meet his growing fatigue.

Without a doubt, he was the one initiating the clinching, but Paul Williams needs to learn to throw straighter punches, not just flick his jabs and seemingly flick his left hand after leaning his left shoulder in. He leaned in too much, having his body hunched almost, and it allowed Quintana to just rush inside easily and tie him up. The referee didn't do much to stop this, but at the same time Williams could have done much more to prevent it as well. Paul Williams was not prepared whatsoever for the type of fight he encountered.

In terms of if Quintana meets the plodding Margarito, maybe he wins, maybe he loses. Quintana needs to get his conditioning to a better level if he intends to challenge at all on the higher level. We've seen Cotto batter Quintana, so it's not like Margarito would be a hero for winning the fight, but it would certainly show that Margarito can hang around the Top 6 range of the division.

 

That's all I'm really saying here. People will be blowing Quintana's horn, but imo he made it a messy fight. Williams to me looked weak. Maybe he's always been that way though because I've never seen anyone really get inside on Williams and just muscle him around. Margarito tried boxing him so we didn't get to see that. But looking back on it in hindsight Margarito would have easily muscled Williams around inside.

Ill prepared would be an understatment. Like someone else was saying I think he celebrated just knowing that he carved off 18lbs to make the fight happen. He looked sloppy as hell and had no answer for keeping Quintana's head out of his chest. The funny thing about it is his attitude around the 10th as well as his trainer's attitude. They seemed very depressed.

Dunno. All I know is if Quintana tries to make a messy fight by grabbing on to Margarito he's gonna get shoved around. Margarito is not as tall as Williams either so his punches are gonna be a bit closer to that soft belly.

At this point I'd naturally pick Margarito but Quintana is a slick guy who thinks in the ring. Cotto got him on size and speed basically by being small enough to get under his guard and do damage. Margarito would have to rely on brute strength and uppercuts to do his damage. But he could do it probably easier than most on here realize. Those rounds 4-8 would be very important for him, considering he'd likely lose the first 4 due to Quintana's energy output.

 

Yep, during the early going I can see Margarito getting beaten by speed, eating a lot of hard left hands in the process. After that he may be able to take over, or he may not - tough to say. Cotto is a clear level above Margarito, so it is hard to take much from Cotto's fight with Quintana and apply it to how Margarito would do.

 

Cottos speed is what killed Quintana......Margo is slow and has little boxing skill I say Quintana wips his ass ala Joel Julio.

 

I am very unbiased in this fight since I dont particularly like either fighter. However i did bet all my Vcash on Quintana tonight.
Margo is too slow for me and lack technique, however he does have some nice uppercuts and Quintana seemed to gas out and quit moving as much in the mid rounds. I can see Margo coming in on the inside and throwing some uppercut combos and from what i saw tonight Quintanas defense was not so great in there so he will get hit flush.
Can he handle it???
I dont think so he seemed stunned at times with Williams and i believe Margos power would just knock him out.
My decision is Margo 9th round KO.

 

I think MArgarito would go to the body effevtively like Cotto and slow Quintana down then trade. Eventually Carlos's chin wouldn't keep up with Margarito's. KO.

 

It's all about styles in fights. Williams didn't give Margarito a boxing lesson. He simply started faster and threw more punches in volume, with Margarito coming on late like always, landing the harder shots and better combos, but too late.

Quintana looked super good against Williams, but anyone who saw Williams against Mitchell knew he was susceptible to southpaws, considering how cleanly a shot Mitchell was able to hit him.

Just because Cotto beat Quintana doesn't make him a lock to beat Margarito based on Quintana beating Williams, nor does it mean Quintana will beat Margarito. Stylistically, it was easy to notice Quintana getting tired in the fight, but Williams was discouraged and had no real answer, whereas Margarito only gets stronger down the stretch and breaks guys down. Most likely he would stop Quintana in 10.

You can compare it to other fighters from the past. Duran beat SRL and gave Hagler all he could handle, whereas Hearns destroyed Duran, but in turn lost to SRL and got destroyed by Hagler. I'm not comparing the fighters, just stating that nothing is set in stone.

Reality is that Cotto gets hit and has been hurt and will be facing the toughest dude he has fought in Margarito. It will be a war of attrition with both guys landing hard body and head shots. Cotto has better skills, but Margarito seems to have a better chin, better power and stamina. Either way it will be a great fight if they both win their next fights like expected.

 

Quintana would beat Margarito very easily. Margarito's pressure is even sloppier than Williams' and Quintana would counter him with less trouble. Plus, Margarito is much slower and smaller than Williams. Hopefully if Margarito beats Cintron, he'll fight Quintana and get owned.
