MARGARITO'S PERFORMANCE WAS SPECTACULAR! The more I watch it, the more I see how well he broke down Cotto. Body punches and pressure was the key! Tucked elbows to the body by Margarito prevented Cotto from excecuting his body attack.

I just watched the fight again for the 4th time, and I had it like the two judges 96-94 for Margarito going into the 11th. Had Cotto survived the 11th it would have been 106-101 going into the 12th.

Rd. 1 Margarito,(close rd) Landed the harder more meaningful punches. To the body and to the center of Cotto's stomach.

Rd. 2 Margarito, (close rd) Landed the harder shots again, busted Cotto's nose.

Rd. 3 Cotto, (Close rd) Cotto boxing well.

Rd. 4 Cotto, very good boxing round for Cotto.

Rd. 5 Cotto, (Close) Margarito turned up the heat at the end though!

    Rd. 6 Margarito, (Close)

    Rd. 7 Margarito, Dominant

    Rd. 8 Margarito, (Close)

    Rd. 9 Cotto, (Close)

Rd. 10 Margarito (Close) Stold the round by really hurting Cotto

    Rd. 11 Margarito TKO Win

You had Margo winning the first round ? It can't be possible.

I had it even going into the 11th, Margo did, indeed, an incredible work throughout the fight. I knew he would stop Cotto eventually after the 6th round where he hurt him.

I had it around even going into the 11th, cringing and standing up throughout the entire fight. It was a nail biter.

Margo's style was nightmarish for Cotto. In following with the same analogy, Paul Williams' style will be nightmarish for Margo, based on the height and reach disadvantage. Cotto could not keep Margo on the outside but I bet Williams can because he is the taller and has more reach. He can earn more space and do more from the outside whereas Margo wants to get on the inside. I do not take anything away from Margo's win since he deserves it. However, he may call himself #1 but not disputed since Williams still owns a win over him and is carrying the WBO welterweight championship.

I can't see Margo winning the first round either.

That aside, scoring is all over the place in a lot of fights because people have drastically different standards. Some favor aggression versus clean counter-punching or vice versa. A lot of it comes down perception, which can be influenced significantly based on personal bias.

This fight's a good example in that my Grandfather wanted Cotto and saw him winning almost every round. It's true that Margorito only dominated a couple rounds, but when I commented to him that I thought Margo's body punching was having a significant impact based on the way I saw Cotto reacting, he dismissed it as nonsense and said that Cotto was blocking everything. The later rounds proved me correct I think because once Cotto slowed a little, he started getting caught.

The hardest question in a fight like this is how to weigh punches and again, bias can creep in quite easily here. In spite of Cotto's more than respectable punching power, I believe Margorito when he said Cotto didn't hurt him once. Toward the end of the fight, he was intentionally taking Cotto's counters so that he could be in a position to throw another punch. Also, Cotto was clearly bothered by Margo's assaults throughout the fight while Margorito seemed unphased by anything and everything that hit him.

So, how heavily to do you weigh punch stats? How heavily do you weigh aesthetically-pleasing headshots versus more effective glancing body blows? Is a punch worth less when it clearly fails to hurt the other guy? Everybody has an opinion on these questions and nobody is 100% right or wrong. The biggest problem is that people tend to see what they want to see. I always try to look at a fight objectively even when I have a favorite, but I don't think that I'm successful all that often because it's hard to see everything and what I'm looking for depends a lot on who I like or what style I prefer.

For the record, I saw the fight even going into the 11th.

You said Margo won round 1, you lost credibility at that point.

I agree with scoring being all over the place. I actually had Cotto winning the first 6. To be honest i think im the only one that did. There were a couple of close rounds but i gave it to cotto for the cleaner punches.
