Cotto has had his bell rung a few times by smaller and less aggressive fighters. By no means is Cotto a shoe in - Nor would I even see him as a 60/40 favourite to win. This is a 50/50 kinda fight IMO. Margarito is much taller, has fought at that weight and higher and has a high volume pressure style. VERY interesting fight and I can't wait to watch it - It will be brutal.

Why? What grounds do you make the larger natural welter who throws a shitload of punches and has decent whiskers onlya 30% chance? Cotto can box, yes, but Margo puts on the kind of pressure that negates movers pretty well - Cotto is hardly "fleet of foot" - He moves well, but I wouldn't describe him as fast.
Shane didn't look old at all that night, had the stamina of a 20 year old but, anyway, the resume you've detailed above, though not impressive according to you, surpasses Margarito's. A pair of wins against Kermit Cintron, a loss to Paul Williams (who lost to Quintana who lost to Cotto) and a poor showing against Joshua Clottey until he injured his hand is no indication that Margo can beat Cotto.
Margarito is slow and has poor defense, anyone can see that plus his resume speaks for itself. Paul Williams beat him before he was himself exposed by Carlos Quintana. Joshua Clottey was totally outboxing him before he injured his hand. Cotto's jab is solid, accurate and he uses it when the situation calls for it. Margo will be walking into Cotto's jab all night long.
It's a matter of opinion, but even 2 months prior to his bout with Margarito, I wouldn't pick anybody over Cotto at 147. So I wouldn't say it would be due to a win over Margarito.
I think Cotto is underrated in his boxing skill. He can box, watch the SSM and Abduellev fights. He's smart enough to position himself and utilize his technique on a rangier fighter. However, Margarito is no slouch and isn't Kelson Pinto. I expect Antonio to utilize his reach and have fun when Miguel tries to go inside. I think they will both take punishment, but I'll go with the longer arms and chin when they are both spent from accumilation. I think Margarito takes this in a very good battle. Honestly, I don't think Arum wants this to happen. He's just bringing them up to tease everyone. DLH knows something we don't as well. He said Cotto would win vs MArg and he wants to fight the boriqua after Floyd 2. Oscar is trying to pump confidence in Miguel to fight Antonio. Oscar De La Hoya sparred with AM before. I honestly think the East LA native knows Cotto can't beat Margarito and will decide not to fight Cotto because he lost, theoretically speaking. Expect PBF-DLH 3...Oscar won't step in the ring with Antonio Margarito, never!
One, Paul Williams was hit with some brutal punches by Margarito. He is just a gigantic welter who can absorb punishment. Two, I wouldn't consider getting punched and grabbed all night by Quintana being "exposed" That's all Quintana did and if that's exposing someone then I guess John Ruiz exposed lots of heavyweights too. Now Margarito will have to get hit. Obviously. But headshots do not have the same effect on him that they do other guys. He eats them much easier. Plus, Cotto is not an effective puncher going backwards. He is effective with his punches when coming forwards where he can step into them for full power. This means that Cotto is going to have to walk into the volume of Margarito at some point to earn his respect. If he elects to jab and move all night he risks getting hit with those overhand rights that Margarito throws. And the uppercut is usually not far behind.
Margarito has a better chin and a higher workrate than Cotto, a lot taller 5-11 to 5-7, i think Margo has better stamina also and Margo loves combat and loves to fight, he's Animalistic in the ring, Cotto's in for a very looooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggg night:dead Margo is a +190 dog here in Vegas ****ing gotta love those odds..:rasta
