This content is protected Warning quality is terrible after the 7th round, mercifully it's only an 8 rounder. Our Mexican Emperor of fistic combat looks good here for his first big step up. Martinez was a perfect challenge what a force. This bout was classy. Next on my watchlist is the SD Martinez caught against Azuhma, has anyone here scored it? Edit: Only copy I can find has 1 minute of each round missing because of very weird programming wtf lad.
Chavez was 22 here and looks about 18. Martinez was 19 here and looks about 36 Film quality is not that bad, really. You can see what’s going on. Anyway, good fight and a good performance from Chavez for his first world title.
Woah, I had no idea Martinez was so young. I never paid it any mind. Jeez! It goes from masterpiece to beer goggles. I agree you can tell what's happening though.
This was the first time that i saw Chavez ; this was after his fight in LA against Adrian Arreola. I subsequently saw Martinez live. By many accounts Martinez was robbed in the first fight with Nelson. In the second fight with Nelson he was stopped in the 12th . If my memory is correct Martinez had an extreme fracture of his right hand that ended the fight.
So Chavez s first title fight! No one could know at this point, that he'd go on to be the legend he was.
Priceless, I became a fan of Martinez in this fight during my quest to see every JCC fight filmed. I haven't seen anything else of Mario. I'm going to watch the second fight later. Do you know anyway to watch the first fight? The version on Youtube is missing about a minute of multiple rounds due to weird, I assume Spanish? commentary.
I don't know. I did see Martinez fight Dana Roston at the Olympic Auditorium, from about the 6th or 7th row ringside.
This is what I wrote when I scored this a year or so back: Julio Cesar Chavez v Mario Martinez (jr. lightweight title) Round 1: 10-10 Even Round 2: 10-9 Chavez Round 3: 10-9 Chavez Round 4: 10-9 Martinez Round 5: 10-9 Chavez Round 6: 10-9 Chavez Round 7: 10-9 Chavez Round 8: 10-9 Chavez Referee John Thomas stops the bout immediately after the 8th round Total through 8 completed rounds: 79-74 Chavez (actual scores unknown) The telecast I watched was entertaining with Armando Muniz and Don Fraser at the mic, but with seconds remaining in the 7th round it switched to a grainy Mexican telecast. Still, it didn't take away from a stirring battle for me. These two absolutely gave it their all with some fabulous exchanges and pure heart. In the 2nd round one could see the difference between the two. Martinez sometimes flailed, whereas Chavez may not have thrown as many shots as Martinez, but he was deadly accurate with what he was throwing. As he would do throughout his career, he would break a man down. The 7th and 8th Martinez tried to turn the tide but Chavez was that pinpoint, but they made for great rounds. Martinez would come again, in fact, I thought he was robbed in his first fight with Azumah Nelson. But this night was Chavez' coronation.
It was the coming of a king from nothing, Oh yeah, Martinez did lot of good work after the fact he was a really good fighter. Do you know where I can get a complete copy of Nelson-Martinez? I have a thread for the 2nd fight if you'd like to compare cards I had Martinez ahead in that fight at the point of the stoppage. Supposedly he was injured in fight 2. Really takes the name "Professor" away or maybe Martinez is just too good to ever dominate? It's weird to say all this, it sounds like the fighter who went 0-2 was better.
JM92, Your question about seeing their first fight had me shaking my head. Until I checked youtube and saw that their first fight has been taken down. Sorry, man, that was where I watched it a year or so back. Don't know why they get taken down.
It’s a conspiracy I tell you! The Nelson team did it! But seriously it gives me a little hope, it means there are complete copies out there and it’ll turn back up eventually.
