Mark Anthony Barriga born 06-11-1993 is a 5'2 Minimumweight with an 11-0 1 KO record. Born in and fighting out of Panabo City, Davao del Norte, Philippines. Mark who's nickname is The Little Boy, not all that intimidating, but apropos, his diminutive stature is what drove him take up the sport, to combat bullies who picked on him because of his size, they called him Bulilit, which means the little guy. o he took up Boxing at 5, fought over 100 times, and managed to snag a few high profile wins, including one of Irish sensation Paddy Barnes. He made his way to the 2012 Olympics and was unfortunately eliminated after losing by a point to Birzhan Zhakypov, infuriatingly a point was deducted from him earlier in the match, that deduction possibly robbed him of a gold medal. He passed up going to the Rio Games, and decided to turn pro in the summer of 2016, his style is far more akin to US fighters than most of his Filipino country men, because he fights almost exactly like Manny Pacquiao arch rival supreme, Floyd Money Mayweather, and no this is not hyperbole, this is not an exaggeration, he does the closest impersonation I think I've ever seen from any of the various Mayweather clones, its damn near spot on. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, well Money May should be utterly smitten after watching Little Mark in action. He does it all, he Philly Shell, sharp upjabs, the footwork, the speed, the reflexes, defense, the jab, the uppercut, check hooks, the one twos, his brilliant control of range, and also like Floyd, he doesn't pack a lot of firepower, but to complicate things, he's a southpaw. Sit back and enjoy the sublime skillset of a potential future kingpin of the division, and when he done with that, then onto to Light Fly, this kid is a tiny little virtuoso. Haha I like the title! This kid is indeed a prodigy. Little correction though, he didn’t pass up on the Rio Olympics, he wasn’t able to qualify because teammate Rogen Ladon already qualified in the light flyweight division. So instead of waiting another four years to make the Olympics again, he turned pro.
Next fight is on April 29 in what is already an IBF World Minimumweight Title Eliminator against Gabriel Mendoza. Should be a shutout win. Heard that it could also be a WBO World Minimumweight Title Eliminator as well. Barriga could be the mandatory for two organizations.
I figured you would, and like you said it's appropriate, I could tell the kid was special after watching about 10 seconds of him a few months back when you mentioned it. As far as the Rio stuff, I didn't think it was significant enough to mention so I glossed over it.
He's also Jerwin Ancajas' best friend. Looks like we'll see a Kyoguchi-Barriga hopefully later this year. That's one hell of a fight!
Sorry Pinoy, as special as I think Barriga is, I'll be rooting for Kyoguchi in that one, you know my personal style preferences well enough to realize that before I even responded. But if he does, he can easily come back from it like Nietes did.
I thought so haha. And Kyoguchi is the only person that has a chance against Barriga at 105. Barriga goes through the 3 other champs Menayothin, Niyomtrong, and Yamanaka fairly easily IMO. I'm kind of hoping he goes the WBO route first so we can make a match-up with Kyoguchi a unification fight.
I'd like to see Barriga school those three with ease, making the eventual win by Kyoguchi all the more impressive. How well do you think Barriga could fair against your boy Nietes? Granted he's a few pounds north, but there's only a one inch height differential, its feasible.
Well guys what do you think about Barriga..... tell what you're feeling, because This content is protected
Barriga is a star in the making but you know I have to choose Nietes. The type of fighters that have a chance against Nietes are big bully types like Higa and Wangek who can pound the body and wear him down. Barriga doesn't have the power to do that and Nietes is too skilled and technical for just about anyone who doesn't have the right arsenal. We have never seen Nietes against someone as technical and skilled defensively as Barriga which is why I think Barriga could make it competitive and lose a 116-112 type decision. But Nietes is getting up there in age so you never know.
I concur, he's not remotely ready for Nietes, but like you said, how many spot on Mayweather clones are there in the lower weights... nit many. It wouldn't shock me in the least if we were both wrong.
