Agree with you 100%... Afl,union and league players pump shitloads of weights but doesnt seem to hamper their ability to perform with unbeleivable speed and power for long periods of time.. As Mark mentioned with a well stratured weight training program a boxer can gain better speed, power, muscluar endurance and good old :bbb explosiveness.
yeah weight training should be part of every boxers workout, if done properly they will not make you biggwer just stronger and faster, unfortunately i think boxing training is the leasgt scientific out of any sport in the world that is taken seriously. mma athletes are so advanced in their training methods i think we could learn alot from them Leckie- did my answer help?
My bro is a strenght and conditioning coach and he is amazed at boxing, how they dont use and even want to learn new training. I think this is true is Aus, but in USA iv seen Gatti and Holifield train some new aged exercises. I dont think old school training should be dropped but a mix of old and new could give you a edge in fitness and strenght.
I have seen plenty of guys in training using explosive weights and pylometrics. Most guys at the top do these days from what I have seen and read.
yeah boxing trainers specialise in boxing, not conditioning, (some can do both) the old "ali never lifted weights " kind of remarks show a huge backlash against change and things they dont understand,
Im just used to a old boxer coach only wanting old school training, hit the bag, sit ups, skipping, focus pads, sparring. But i also think its the fighter who should do extra cardio by himself and thats when he can to the new age stuff.
yeah nothing beats proper boxing training, but you can get good results supplementing it with some strength andconditioning exercises, i find its much more refreshing than hitting the bags all the time too, breaks things up
How are you hands Mark? Strong? Have you ever hurt/broken them? DO you do any training that isnt typical boxing traing? Yoga? or anything? How do you prepare mentally for a fight?
i hurt my hands in 05, was really frustrating, was away from home just to box and had to sit around doing nothing. i dont really do anything out of the ordinary, boxing weights and str and con exercises. mentally i just go into my own world a few days before the fight, most of my family say im very grumpy and withdrawn around fight time
Thanks mate, i find it interesting talking to a current fighter who is open and honest. So thanks for that :good On another note, guess what!! Last night i got given a new set of gloves signed by Daniel Geale :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy :happy Seeing how he is my fav aus boxer, im pretty stoked. Ill take a pic soon of me wearing them :bbb
 i dont think so, i do like Dawson, just not Vs Geale. I think Dawson fights flat footed from his Muay Thai training.
