I'm just watching him against Juarez, Vorapin, and Arthur Johnson. Now this guy has to be one of the most underated in the past years.

Filthy I say. Pinpoint combinations with blazing speed. Flashes of Whitaker defensively. Flashes of Roy Jones with his ability to have his hands at his waist and beat his man 3 punches to 1. Just an amazing, beautiful boxer.

One of the best I have ever seen.

Too Sharp was a joy to watch in his hey day. His win over Montiel a while back, was such a good fight. Johnson turned back the clock that day to score a huge upset. I almost wanted to weep when he won. Great fighter!

The man was a monster at 112 and even at an old age gave Montiel his 1st defeat. Not to mention he was giving Rafa Marquez until he got caught, and that was at bantamweight!

too Sharp was my man. He had to have been in his 30's when he beat Booty Shorts, and that was after a 3 year prison term. One of DC's finest, criminally underrated because of how small he is.

I think he was only 32-33 when he fought Montiel. He was seen as more of an afterthought before that. I think mainly due to his losses to Rafa Marquez, although those were in a higher weight then he should have been.

Absolutely. We're seeing bigger fighters who can fight effectively up to the age of 40 from 160 to HW, while these smaller guys, who's skill and talent outshines those of bigger men tenfold are close to done after 30. And they don't often get anywhere near as many chances to make the big bucks as the bigger guys do. It's a shame really. In a perfect world, they would be paid millions while the "names of today" work to earn big paydays.

I do think it's great we have some incredibly talented fighters around the 115 to 122 range. Izzy, Mirares, Darchinyan, Rafa Marquez, Juanma, Jhonny Gonzales (I HOPE no one forgets about this guy), Donaire....I predict some major fights in the future with these small, but GIANT talents.

Told ya ACB.....very very underrated fighter. He was a P4P rated fighter at 112. I also feel he was the best at that weight during his reign. He could get you on the inside or outside.

Good post. The little guys are the best to watch in boxing.

This isn't to beat up on any of these guys, but I think Johnson stands above all of them. For as much credit as Ivan Calderon gets, Johnson does everything he does from the outside, with more accuracy, great footwork, and with the willingness to go in and finish his man.

You were right on all accounts, shocked really this guy doesn't get more attention here but maybe its just a matter of not seeing him.

KG did Johnson remind a little of Jones? I don't know who was watching who, or if it was both, but these guys are similar in a lot of ways.

A lot of pure boxers are more impressive than Calderon ACB, especially someone like Johnson. Calderon doesn't even belong in the discussion, as he's a 1 trick pony, as good as he is at his one trick.

I think it's more impressive for a guy to be offensively working and throwing in high volume, while showing top form defence and moves than keeping the workrate down to a minimum, pot shotting and keeping range. A fighter needs to do what is effective for them, but a guy who can make guys miss 5-6 shots in a row in the pocket and counter them silly should always be rated as having more skill than someone like Calderon, who can only operate from range and his fight.

Now who might you be thinking of here, Amserdam? :yep

I agree though, watching Johnson makes me realize why I can't fully buy into the Calderon hype.

He reminded me alot of Jones actually, one of the reasons I liked him so much.

Obviously there were some differences, but he was a bit like Jones, and a bit like Whitaker with his sharpness. Incredible fighter.

Very true. You know, I do like Calderon, but I must admit to getting a little bored after about 5-6 rounds. Guess it's not his fault he's so much better then his opponents. But like you said, the willingness to go in and finish isn't there with Ivan. Seems only a few actually possess that mentality today. To try and close the show big. Damn...just thinking about that makes me miss Tito even more now.
